Spoke to a cousin of mine who is a dentist. He says he is making enough money now that he can buy a brand new F430. I was quite surprised as I thought Dentist didn't make that kind of money. If that is true then maybe I am in the wrong profession? Any dentists on Fchat that own Ferraris, especially newer ones?

Yeah, but he has had his business for a long time. Made a nice list of patiences that he sees on regular basis and the new ones. He has upgraded to 3 offices, everyone being bigger with better equipments and better locations.

Sadly this guy isn't into cars. He just upgrades his house and has his daughters all attend private school.

A good general dentist in private practice can easily make more than a good general medical practitioner in the same. At least here in Singapore.

People always need their teeth fixed, and they tend to be loyal to their dentists. Something to do with the pain factor - you go back to the one that causes you least pain or no pain at all, and avoid the ones that do. Hence the importance of being really good and competent and generous with the novocaine. :D

Plus modern dentistry has quite a surgical component to it, you can make even bigger bucks if you sell yourself as a "maxillofacial surgeon".

My dentist has a bentley cont gt and an '07 S600 sport and lives in a $2.1 million dollar house. There are plenty of successful dentist. One of them runs the La Bella Macchine and has some impressive cars.

A general dentist can make over 1 million per year in take-home pay working 4 days a week on 8 hour days. I know several that do.

That said, the average income in Canada for full-time dentists is around 175,000 per annum when I last checked.

I think if any dentist was so inclined to, s/he could afford any vehicle desired after a few years of full-time practice. Thus, a new 430 should be no problem.

I had some friends in dental school and finishing oral surgery in a major market (ie. LA, NY, CHI) they could expect $400-500k to start (after 11yrs university/dental/residencies) and be making $1mm+ consistently by their mid-30s. Not bad if you want a steady career and can deal with it.

Like Andrew, I know that work is not for me, so all power to them.

My father is a dentist with his own practice in Philadelphia. He doesn't own a Ferrari (three kids in college though). He does very well and could easily buy a Ferrari if he wanted too. He doesn't think he would get enough use out of it to justify the cost of ownership.

I thought about it...looking into mouths all day didn't appeal to me, but working on a drafting table wasn't too sexy either and paid a lot less.

I seem to remember a time, maybe in the mid 80's, when there was an oversupply of new dentists, and they weren't making that much $$...any DDS's out there who remember this?

I don't understand the history of it, but most dentists aren't bound/restricted by insurance contracts. Thus, if you have dental insurance, they will apply it toward their normal fee, but what they can charge is not limited. I have several close friends in the field, they make a ton of money. Just gotta enjoy the whole mouth thing.

I KNEW I should have been a Dentist! :):) Although its not really my line of work, but for that kind of serious money, I think most can adapt and get used to it at the end of the day. :)

You should just open a practice and learn as you go. If you suck at it just use the chair to cut hair in and open a salon.

I've heard most dentists do very well. That being said I think dentists have a short career span. Most retire in their early 50's--being bent over for years while working on patients teeth takes its toll.

My next door neighbor is a dentist, he's 49 yrs old.

Modest home (most are around $160,000 now), he drives a 5 yr old Honda, is twice divorced (no kids, no alimony).

I don't think he makes 'that much', but with him, he 'works' 4 days a week for 2 hours in the morning, comes home, then goes back for 2 hours in the afternoon, and half the time doesn't go back for the afternoon at all.

I'd trade money for less work -er- hours..

    No kidding.

I seem to remember hearing that dentists also have one of the highest suicide rates of all professions. Something to do with inflicting pain in their patients...

I know wealthy doctors and dentists and poor ones as well. The poor ones are horrible at managing their accounting and receivables or divorces are draining their income. I mentioned liability insurance and PPO's to a doctor friend over Thanksgiving dinner last year. His reply was "How would you like to relive your circumcision"? I really hit a cord with him (And I'm sure dentists are in the same boat). He told me he has to put in 30% more hours than he did three or four years ago to make the same amount of money today!
