Hello, Jon in Delaware here. I am an active FChat member here in the Mid Atlantic and proud to announce my 25 year old son has been accepted into the Masters of Finance program at the University of Denver...or is it Denver University??? Either way he will be moving to Denver around August. We both are active Driver Education event attendees and Go Kart enthusiasts and Autocross enthusiasts. He is also a golfer with a 10 handicap. We both love to ski and outdoor activities are on the top of our list of fun things to do.I would like some help from the locals if I could ask please.

Any leads or suggestions on housing near campus?
Any active car clubs where he could meet some people other than fellow students?
Anyone looking to hire part time a Cum Laude grad who has a double major in business and finance pursuing his Masters in Finance?

We both love Colorado having been there several times and my only concern "for him" is that he will love Denver so much he wont come back to the East Coast....So I will have to buy a home there!!!! Thanks for any help or comments you can provide. Jon in Delaware

    Jon,

I can't answer any of your questions but your fears for him are well placed. He ain't coming back. 300+ days of bright sun, endless outdoor activities, and an overall positive vibe make this place hard to leave. Oh well, it will give you an excuse to visit and check out the slopes in the winter.

Don't be discouraged if you don't get many responses to your question. Everyone is busy hiking, biking, golfing, exploring a mountain road or just enjoying themselves in the great outdoors.

Furman is right, it will be nearly impossible to drag your son back home. The University of Denver has lots of housing close by the campus. When he comes out (or before) you can contact the admissions office for help with student housing. As for clubs, there is the local chapter of the Ferrari Club of America. Also, many good people to talk to at Ferrari of Denver. You can start with John Yueh who is the service writer and Derek Fenning who is the salesman. Both these guys are people I consider friends.

Best of luck to your son this coming fall, I know he'll enjoy DU, as I did many moons ago.

    Erik

    Hi Jon,

I have very good frineds that live in the Observatory Park neighborhood and they love it. The homes on the north side of Evans tend be less expensive but still very nice. Actually, my wife and I are contemplating selling our apartment downtown and moving to that neighborhood so it can't be that bad :) As far as car clubs go, have him check out the Saturday morning car meets in Lone Tree or the Southlands C&C meet...browsing the RM forum should give him an idea of when and where to go.

Derek, are you aware of any Campus housing options? Little premature for me to be looking to buy. Thanks for the feedback on the C&C options. He will be jones'in for a car guy fix not long after he arrives on campus. Jon in Delaware

Hate to ask as its probably available on the internet somewhere but do you have a recommendation for a agency that handles rentals in the area of Denver University? Obviously we can go through the support program for Students on campus but this would offer a possible alternative. thanks Jon in Delaware

    Hi Jon,

You bought the GT3 from me. I wish I still had it, that was a very good car.

My daughter goes to DU and as you know I'm a Colorado native although I'm spending most of my time in Florida. Great karting south of town. Lot's of good golf and he'll like hitting a 9 instead of 7.

I'm surprised how many kids stay on campus at DU even as grads. They get them hooked on free light rail pass. They head downtown to party with no worries about parking or driving. At any rate, shoot me an email and I can give you some general direction on housing. Lot's of choices.

Hey Tom, I will shoot you an email. By the way I still have the GT3 and doubt it will ever be sold. As you may recall its my third 996 GT3 and I finally decided I must have one in my permanent collection so yours filled the spot. Great car and has been mechanically flawless. Looking forward to talking to you and probably meeting you one day in person as I am sure to be in your area now several times per year. Jon in Delaware

They look nice and were just built within the last couple of years. The location is literally across the street from the campus.

I just spent some time with my daughter at DU. She said I was nuts that grads live on campus. Many rent house of which there is a wide variety near by. She said the current hot spots for cool grad housing are:

    Asbury Greens

    University Lofts

    Vista loft

All close and well set up.

Put a deposit down on Asbury Green and University Loft.See which one works out for the best. Pretty nice facilities. What a world of difference between University of Delaware where my daughter goes to college and the University of Denver where my son will be attending. At the Univ. of Delaware if you didnt have your housing decision done by January then either your going to be living in a extremely high end (read expensive ) apt or a closet way off campus. Cost of both the Asbury Green and the University loft are mid range cost in comparison to average at the University of Delaware but WAAAAAY nicer than Delaware. Thanks for the housing help Tom and everyone....now anyone need to hire a Master degree in Finance grad candidate??? Jon

    Hey there,
I went to DU for MBA in 2001; at that time, I rented a condo across the street from the Coors Fitness center on Buchtel. It was a great place to live while in school.

Hi Jon, I live by Harvard Gulch Park which is about 1.5 miles west of campus. Anyway there is an executive course in the park. It's cheap, close and never busy.

University Lofts are very new. Jamba Juice on the ground floor and a pub around the corner.

My in-laws own a 2nd home three blocks south of Harvard Park. They are rarely there, so they set it up to rent. If you or the family are going to spend some time out here exploring the sites and getting your son settled, it's a nice option. Just let me know and I will get you taken care of.-Nick

You are 100% right. I moved here (from NY) for school about 4 years ago and there's no way I'm going back.

I'm moving to Denver in January. I just graduated with a degree in Economics and I'll be applying to the Finance program at UD. My girlfriend just got into their Law School, so I'm moving regardless of whether or not I get into school there.

It's great to read all the positive things everyone here has to say about the area. Denver has always been on my short list of places I want to live, largely because my two favorite hobbies are snowboarding and triathlon. I also love karting so I'm pumped to find out there is a track nearby. Anyways, I just wanted to say I'm thrilled to be headed there and I hope to meet some of the people from F-chat.

Something about the western U.S. that I never realized until going to college in the eastern U.S. is that for nearly all of the universities, you reverse the "U" and the first letter of the university's location. For example, University of Denver is said "DU" rather than "UD." In fact, saying "UD" in Denver in reference to the University of Denver is almost sure to draw a blank stare. Other examples of this are the University of Oklahoma ("OU"), the University of Colorado ("CU") and the University of Kansas ("KU"), among others. When I first came to Georgia, people would tell me they have friends at "UC." Originally I had no idea what they were talking about!

Thanks for the heads up. I'd rather not get that wrong during an admissions interview.
