Greetings lucky Ferrari owners, I'm a newbie here and have been lurking for some time. I have a question, and sorry if this question has been beat into the ground. I've only been watching the F-430 (my price range) but is the F-458 better when it comes to maintenance repairs and things in general just breaking? Just wondering if I should wait a little longer and save more money and spring for a 458 instead of the 430. Any opinion or advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
458 is generally more reliable and doesn't have the same worries with things like clutch wear but the general consensus is: if you are worried about the cost of repairs, this is not the right brand for you. Unexpected $20-30K things happen to both the 430 and 458
Wow, I just thought things might be different. I am not overly concerned about the repair cost and that's why the 430 was my price range, making sure I can cover the unexpected expenses and the payment. My thought process was if the 458 didn't have those same unexpected 20-30k surprises then I could fork out more for the car and not worry as much for the maintenance in the event if breaks unexpectedly. But I see there's no relief there. Thanks for the information.
Had my 458 more than 3 years and 15000 miles - when I sold it the front tyres and rear brake pads were due - apart from regular maintenance... That was 4k. IMO the 458 is very reliable.
I have both, in my opinion the 430 might have greater repair costs down the line such as clutch, f1 pump, headers, exhaust due to it being an older car and exhibiting more wear and tear. This is with the assumption that both cars were maintained and driven similarly.
I think it depends on how you use it. If you track it often or never drive it, then $$$ to replace or repair will be more. But you should fork out more to get the 458, because it's newer, so chance of getting surprise $$$ is less, some more I heard it's much better than the 430, except Scuderia.
You should be able to pick up a 458 for about $180k or so. Check the service history, maybe bring a professional to help you assess it. But you shouldn't expect $20-30k expenses. $3-4k a year MAX as long as you maintain it properly and don't wreck it.
Thanks all who have chimed in. I don't plan on tracking the car, well I say that now. lol But this will be a retirement gift for myself. I think I will start monitoring prices of the 458and see if its even doable. I had budget 130K for a 2007 or above F430, but maybe with the change of year, maybe a F458 might be in the plans.
If you can finance over a period of time a few hundred dollars a month is worth treating yourself over. Don't buy more than you can afford but be realistic. The nice things about buying a 458/430 is that they have a chance to appreciate if the market becomes nostalgic about the NA v8 mid engine Ferraris in the next few years.
Actually I was already slated to finance 30K so that was very maintainable in the event something unexpected occurred. If I move up to the 458, I'll have to save another 20k depending on how much I can get a 458 for. At 180K I'm pushing it, at 170K, then I'm affordable but maxed out. Not as easy on a retirement salary. lol I'll watch the market for another 6 months or sell my custom Harley.
I approach all financial investments/purchase presuming the "worst" and ask if I am willing/able to accept the consequences. It has made all my decisions much easier. I have bought many a nice "toy" being pleasantly surprised nothing happened, as is the case of my well worn 2012 458. I once bought a car whose engine lasted 2 weeks. I have made many business investments that have paid off handsomely, while accepting the occassional, but considerably less costly, mistakes. Bottom line, if you had a $15,000 repair could you handle it? Best
A retirement present and you're financing? Wouldn't be my choice. At least not on a depreciating asset like the 458. Buy a youngtimer like a 550 or older and sell it at a (possibly slight) profit. 550's are very reliable, if you start with a good one. Onno
Another one you want to consider is 599 GTB. This one just getting prettier when older. But make sure to check properly as the $$$ to repair V12 is huge.
No issue with financing. If you can make a higher % investing your cash than the rate you finance at why spend the cash all at once?
The 458 is very inexpensive to own. It never breaks! I personally like the 360 or 430 better as drivers cars. If you can I would recommend. a manual car. I recommend this for two reasons , They will appreciate in value because Ferrari does not make manuals anymore and and the earlier i.e. F1 transmissions were not that good. Also in my opinion the 360 and 430s are better drivers cars and much more exciting. These cars can be wallet flattening expensive. I had a 3 inch scratch on my 458 and it cost me $7k US dollars to fix. This was my cheapest of the three options givem me by the dealer. The good news is the repair is perfect. I think the 458 Ferrari is a soft driver! The dual clutch F1 is awesome as are the sound and appearance of the car. The new C7 Corvette is a better drivers car and a lot less expensive. Before you blow me off try one and see what you think. I would go for the 360 or a 430 or maybe look at the Lamborginis. I have not driven the new V10 offering. Good luck and have fun whatever you do. Lee
A lot more people seem to be putting miles on the 458 and driving them more. Very hard to find an F430 with more than 30,000 miles on it and the cars been around a lot longer. Much easier to find a 458 with that many miles. For the most part, newer technology works better than older technology. I have had both and have used both as a daily driver. I personally think the 430 is a dinosaur in comparison of drive quality as a daily driver or if you plan on using. Mine do not sit so I may not be the best guy to ask. I also do not track the car. Hope some of this was helpful. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I was pretty lucky with my F430 spider BUT I had a mid 2008. I think before the 2008 updates, there were more issues. I didn't have any problems with the 458 but in fact, I liked the F430 better --so go figure. I think the 458 is pretty reliable now that they've gotten through the early year transmission failure issue. How will the transmission do in 10 years? Who knows. That's the one bad thing. You can't fix a 458 gearbox. It has to be replaced. Most of the problems of the F430 box was clutch replacement and hydraulic issues. Both of these can be fixed for a lot less money than replacing a 458 box. So, it sort of depends.
Generally, the 458 is newer and better in technology and IMO more reliable than 430, as Jasone said that we don't have to worry about clutch wear on 458 since she has a dual clutch and longer life span. Unexpected expenses may happen on both cars but 458 may be smaller percentage over 430 because again 458 is newer car, I really suggest to get all the cars check to the authorized service/dealer before purchase her, we just never know how the car was driven and maintained from the previous owner, this will reduce the unexpected expenses. Answering your concern on 458 over 430, I would say 458 is the way to go, why? so many different aspect that make 458 is better car comparing 430. I hope this help you ..... Good lucks with your decision and car hunting.
I recently traded in my 08 F430 Spider to FNE, for a 458. I loved my 430, but holy smokes...a 458 destroys it. Not just mechanically, how fast, etc...even in beauty. Which can be argued, but I'll tell you what, go look at a nice 430, they are perfect...then look at a 458 and you'll drool, literally they will pick you up off the floor with smelling salts. It's the next level of Ferrari beauty and performance. What a car, I love mine, it makes me want nothing else.
You will soon, haha definitely if you come up from asking 10% off to 5% off you can have one by the end of the week.
