I've got about a year and a half and 14K miles of ownership in my Maserati GranSport Coupe (F1) and have found it to generally be a much more practical ride than I expected, and I love the overall character.

However, when loaded up with four adults (living in NYC I'm often providing transport to friends when we travel together since most don't have cars) the car is slightly too far on the sport end of things in terms of NVH and available space, even if people are generally surprised at the relative shape and comfort of the back seats. The F1 transmission is of course harsh and fragile, but its held up better than expected and is a non-factor when highway cruising.

So... I'm toying with the idea of upgrading my Italian grand tourer situation at some point. Luckily for me these depreciate with even greater ferocity than other Italian cars. Here are some options that seem to me to offer similar utility to each other:

~$40K - 2009 Maserati GranTurismo S: this is the only year and version offering the F1 transmission, dry sump, and transaxle layout for the weight distribution and rotation you'd expect based on its looks. I haven't tried one, but I have tried later models with the conventional auto which felt very dead to me compared to my GranSport

~$80K - Ferrari 612 F1: Why F1? Because the 3-pedal setup goes for about 3x the price. I have a soft spot for the fact that this is more or less the final elegant and gentlemanly Ferrari design, before Ferrari joined the universal trend for ultra-aggressive and even angry-looking sports cars.

~$120K - Ferrari FF: The truly modern and much more expensive option. More practical too, with more space and AWD. DCT is far more advanced and refined than F1. Obviously more trunk space as well, but based on my usage of the GranSport I know that the modest trunk sizes of the other two would not be an issue for my needs. The others I consider to be pretty much fully depreciated... but is this one still searching for rock bottom?

Bonus round options: Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT (the one with the F1, dry sump, and transaxle layout) at ~$25K, or Alfa Romeo Giulia QV at ~$55K (probably the obvious "sensible" option, if any of these could be considered sensible).

All great choices. If you can, then go with the FF. It is head and shoulders above the 612..I agree it has not reached rock bottom, so if you plan on adding miles as you have with your GS, then you should be prepared to for a trade in value when times come to be at around $80k (if you buy a 2012 for $120k today)...

Yes, that seems to be the case. Honestly I'm thinking the GranTurismo and the 612 are probably much more similar to each other than either one is to the FF. 612 has the 12 cylinders, but also more weight, so it largely evens out. And the exhaust note on the GT really holds it's own. F1 in both is very similar.

While the FF is in many respects a proper modern supercar, the GT is a *hell* of a lot of car for under $40K, and you can feel comfortable about throwing the dog in the back.

I have my eye on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio but I haven't seen it in person yet, just in pictures.

I've been going back and forth between the 612 and the FF since I sold my 456M last year. Objectively, the FF is the superior car, but I just can't get excited about the looks. And as Andrew mentioned, the FF is not at the bottom of its depreciation slope yet. So I've decided to wait until the FUV comes out and see where things stand then.

With a 612, I could at least convert it to manual. Might have to fabricate a few parts, but no big deal otherwise. I think with a 360 and 612 manual, I'd be set.

For reasons outlined above, I don't put the FF in the decision between a Maser GT and a 612 (price, size, looks primarily). I also don't consider a four door sedan in the same "GT" class as the 2+2 cars you mentioned. So, while the Alfa is a cool car, so are a dozen other "sporty sedans".

[If you want an 09 Maser GT F1, you should get in contact with the member here selling his in the classifieds. He was asking $35k iirc and its got a new clutch. He just got a deposit on it, but if the deal falls thru...]

With that said, I don't think there is a bad choice between the 612 and the Maser GT (especially since you are comfortable with the F1 transmission). Of course a "like for like" condition/miles 612 is going to be at ~2x the price of the GT.

I owned a Gransport Spider and just bought a 2014 GT Cabrio. My experience with the F1 was that I wanted to avoid it in my future cars (I had the GS Spider and Challenge Stradale). Although, thinking about it a bit, the Superfast II that comes in the 430 Scuderia and (iirc) the 2009 Maser GT is far and away the best F1 and pretty darn fun to drive..so if one had to go F1, the Scud or the 09 Maser GT are the best options.

Last thing I will say is what I always say when a "this or that car" thread gets posted...the answer can always be "both". Own one and then the other. Some here would say the 612 (bought in the 80k range) is at the bottom of its depreciation curve. So perhaps (who really knows) you could get one and not suffer big depreciation. And, otoh, you can get an 09 Maser GT F1 for a deal right now, but they are certainly going to continue to depreciate. So, maybe 612 now and Maser GT in a few years. Or vice versa (then you could get a later year 612 or even an FF for sub $100k).

Let us know what you decide.

Hello all, first time poster on this forum. I am in the same boat. Currently in a ‘17 Maserati GTS for 30 more (very happy) months. Planning on one of the following for purchase: Rapide S, FF, Wraith (wildcard) as they will likely trough-out by this time. I am 6’6” have 2 kids (car seats) and my wife. We have all switched spots with where to sit and can say the car is great from any seat and angle. It is also “practical” as it is a grandtourer, well balanced, and enough power to please you. What it may not have in torque vs. other vehicles with greater displacement it makes up with in symphony and occasion. It has flare, but can also be subdued and a reasonable long distance cruise especially in ICE mode so the drone of the exhaust is not intrusive.
My recommendation, pickup a 3 year lease from Maserati in the next few months. December will be the last of the last new Granturismos (apparently). Take a $40k reduction from MSRP, reap their additional discounts (changing monthly), and drive the hell out of the car!

Thanks everyone! Look forward to Many brainstorming sessions and discussions! Sumit- At the least go to the dealership and try out each car as though you would live with it for two or three years. Most dealerships are very reasonable when you show genuine interest and willing to give you a pro long test drive. Bring the family as they will make a significant impact.

You are definitely making me want a GranTurismo! I've been trying to find time to go test drive one again, and to check out some other cars. Unfortunately I've been traveling so much that I've hardly been home, and the time that I am home I need to allocate to social obligations or house renovations. Italian cars are a demanding hobby!

The GranTurismo really does seem like a smart idea. I also really want to test drive a true manual (3-pedal) Maserati Coupe 4200... just seems like it would be utterly timeless working a naturally-aspirated V8 through a proper stick-shift pushing a rear-mounted transaxle, something I could keep as a weekend car indefinitely. Only issues are 1) my girlfriend wouldn't be able to swap up driving duties with me on longer hauls, and 2) I currently enjoy letting friends experience the feel of driving Italian, and if it was a stick that would mostly be out of the question. More concerned with #1 than #2.

P.S. I love your red interior!! My current GranSport is all-leather all-bordeaux on the interior, with a silver exterior. I'm all about the classical grand tourer color combos.

P.P.S. Is that a luggage rack on the roof?! How does that work?

    Thanks G. Peppar will do!
Sumit- (and everyone else) I’m not trying to steer you away from F cars by the way. Just thinking in terms of budget and usabilty. As far as Ferrari’s, check out a 456GT! I’m sure owners can weigh in as well. As the years go bye it’s becoming prettier and prettier!
The rack is a SeaSucket vacuum mount bike rack to accommodate 3 bikes (fork mount in the front) and 3 separate individual vacuum mounts for the rear tire. It’s holding a Thule Chariot 2 person stroller/bike trailer and then my sons Berg pedal car which we painted black.
Some of my work colleague (car snobs) have related a red interior to a baboons rear end, but it makes me appreciate the car while driving (so not only onlookers can enjoy it!) PS- Bordeaux is a rich color (aged well); less boy racer!
The paddles do not make me miss manual too much and my wife can enjoy it.

My first Ferrari was a 2001 456M GTa. They are fantastic touring cars. I took mine on two epic adventures of over 4K miles each, and it was fantastic. No issues.

There's some real value to having the paddles instead of the stick, and if it were to be my only or primary car I would absolutely stick with that, but I'm about to have an M5 so that means my Italian can be geared more towards leisure instead of general practicality. I still insist on 4 seats though so I can share the fun! Otherwise all sorts of non-Ferrari and non-Maserati cars would be up for consideration, like the Corvette, or Alpha 4C, or Cayman.

I just traded in my 2009 Masserati Gran Tourismo 4.7S - I got $23K but it had 78K in miles. I loved the way the car looked (black on black). Good acceleration and really never gave me any problems except for an evap valve (easy inexpensive fix).

Now what I did not like; 1) The car has a blind spot from hell. 2) Unless you are all circus midgets, putting four adults in the car is not easy or comfortable. 3) The damn stickies on the buttons were absolutely terrible.

I have owned all three. The FF without a doubt - not even close.

Best of luck with the purchase.

Erik- that’s great you have insight on all three! Will pick your brain about the FF soon!
Ncjetskier- sorry that she has left your stable. I’m shocked about the blind spot, I wanted to comment about how wonderful the car was because it had virtually none! The doors are long enough that you have a clear view. It’s no MBZ CL or S-coupe but I’ve been happy.
I’m 6’6” wife is 5’2”and 3/4” (very important) and this is the space I have behind her!
