Awesome video. I have the tape at home and the Mulsanne before the chicanes just seems to go on forever.

I believe this is from his "In car 956" so it's not a 917 as the title on the video page says.

From what I've read the 917 is anything but "very good" over 200mph. I think the drivers nick named it the ulcer (or something like that) because of it's desire to wander around at those speeds.

    Always nice to watch.

Unbelievable! Takes some serious brass balls to take that LOONNGG straight flat out like that. Imagine rolling it at that speed...

All that would be left would be a crumpled little ball........:(

    Derek's cool...

Notice also how Bell takes his hand off the wheel as he's passing the Sauber,
probably even waiving at the poor guy!

When Hans Stuck joined Porsche AG, he was amazed at how stable the 956s and 962s were on the Mulsanne Straight. He used to go on about the old cars he drove at Le Mans such as BMW M1 where he would not dare take a hand off the wheel at speed or the car would be into the rails.

Love that video, can watch it over and over again. In fact, the original copy I had of it from 1984 (or so) was played so many times, it eventually broke.

Yes, it is a 956. Also, my thoughts are that certainly this video would make it clear (to those who didn't have a clue about racing and believed that anybody could do it) just how much driver skill this level of racing actually takes. In other word, for 99.9999% of the population...forget it. You and I couldn't do it!

Is it just me or is the 908/3 (in the second clip) underdriven. I cannot see any "proper" driving line the whole time...?

    Have fun.

Oh - I have been looking for the 2 DVD set of 'Lap of the Gods', I've only found it in the UK, I don't think UK DVD's will play on USA players, does anyone know if it has ever been released for USA region players ?
I saw history made on it - only one person has ever crashed an ELF camera car, and I saw it about 75 yards from me..... I'm sure you all know who and where....
