I've always wondered how one even gets to open up a dialog with Ferrari when it comes to designing and producing a one off car. It's not just about having the money I assume. You have to know a guy who knows a guy right? What are the steps and how does the process work?

I know there are many reason to keep the design private (don't want someone copying designs you commissioned, etc) but would you ever post any pics/renderings/sketches of this?

    Why would VW be involved?

It seems that you could do anything you wanted to a car - unless you just wanted VW to be involved.

I am not questioning - just asking a question!

Start with a 599 GTO and reference a 275 GTB for styling. Perhaps with a trick folding hardtop (like the California's, not the Aperta's) because convertibles are fun.

Only because it would involve a lot of engineering and without their help it wouldn't be feasible.

It got close and then faded away.

Id start with a Scud engine/chassis/proper manual gearbox and style it after the 288 GTO with a targa roof.

    My version of perfection.

This!! But I want three pedals... Don't care if it's not the fastest car, just think it would be awesome to have the classic shape of a 275, 250, even a 330 with the modern tech under the skin. Next would be a 458 with a 288 body, and turbos:)

A 360 challenge stradale with a revised front bumper modeled after the 430 scuderia.

    V12 engine from the 599xx

    Manual transmission

Enough room between the two seats or behind them to fit a 10" subwoofer and the radio unit having at least 2 standard radio deck size slots capable of fitting an aftermarket navigation unit

A modern day Testarossa using the F458 Chassis with the new F70 Engine with a complete retro design look. My goal at least 950+hp.

I would also take a new LP670 and retro design a modern Countach around the chassis with a Twin Turbo System from UGR.

If I could design a Ferrari, I would do a short wheel base roadsters, about the size of a Miata or BMW Z3, curvy, like the 458 or 246. Shoehorn a 3.0L V8, 32V with 300-350bhp into the front. 6-speed manual transmissions, rag top. No frills, no navigation, no F1 trans. Roll bar like the Z4. All aluminum chasis/body/doors. Not a repliracer like the Scud, or GT like the California, but a pure sportscar. MSRP $150,000. 0-60mph in 4 secs, top speed 170-180s.

I'm really fascinated by this concept. Most (if not all) of my favorite cars of all time have serious racing pedigree, and would love to see a modern car with a background in motorsport. Off the top of my head, the most recent one was the Porsche Carrera GT, which had a V10 derived from a Le Mans prototype.

My dream Ferrari would be a F1 sourced V8, detuned to around 550-600 HP; dedicated to using lightweight materials and keeping curb weight to ~1200 kg [I'd like it to be lower than that, but I don't think it would be possible with today's stringent safety standards]. Manual transmission would be the only transmission type offered, simply because it's lighter than a dual clutch gearbox.

As for styling...as far as I'm concerned, Pininfarina can (mostly) do no wrong, so that base would be covered.

While the P4/5 is fabulous it is unfortunately the exception which proves the rule that most 'improvements' are anything but...

Personally i'm very glad Ferrari don't completely plagiarise their own heritage by taking the easy way out by doing recreations like the majority of other car makers these days. I'm also glad they are brave enough to attempt fresh and modern designs with only nods and cues to their illustrious past, even if they are sometimes polarising and controversial.

I find these recreation cars a bit like when a modern pop bands lazily re-records something like a classic Beatles song. Modern recording techniques and technology allows them to make the songs production technically close to perfect, but they never have the feel, soul or vision of the originals.
If every new band only re-recorded old classic songs, it would stop the evolution of song writing and music, and this is how I feel about this ongoing trend of recreations in car design.

So on that note, instead of recreating the design of a car from the past, i would rather recreate the ethos of a past car, and that would be the ethos of the F40.

Smallish Twin Turbo V8, race car for the road looks and dynamics, minimal comforts, cutting edge materials, manual gearbox and most important, no more then 1100 kg (with modern materials im sure 850 kg would be possible if the car was small enough).

Sadly there is no recent Ferrari that could lend its architecture for building such a car, so i can only hope that the Enzo replacement follows Ferrari's light weight, down sizing promise of there Mille Chile concept..

    Spot on Jim. :D

The idea for the thread wasn't for people to try to redesign P4/5, but to start from a blank slate and figure out what special project they might commission in a similar manner if they could. I've just loved reading people's responses, there are some great ideas floating about in here. :)

That'd be pretty darned cool.

I have wondered why Ferrari don't revive the Dino brand with a simple lightweight low-power sportscar... sort of a premium version of an Elise. It seems like there would be a lot of demand for something like that, especially amongst proper sportscar enthusiasts.

Definitely a very cool-looking car and probably the one recent road supercar that's really captivated my imagination. I do wish they had given it pop-up headlights though.

How expensive could that possibly be just to do a quick modification to give it some? Are we talking thousands... tens of thousands?

    Oooh, that'd be special. :D

    LOL! Brilliant. :)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Homologating headlights is VERY expensive. You have to test them for 50,000 hours and prove they meet many worldwide statutes. That's one reason that except for P 4/5 I'm not sure it's been done. Ours cost 250K to homologate.

One thing about commissioning a design. Make sure you own the ip, that it's a work for hire and that in my case (PF) can't revisit that space (P4) again.

I would like a modern version of either a 512M or the 312P based on the Enzo (or new Enzo) chassis with street weight of 1000kgs, 670hp, F1 superfast 2 GB, CCB gen2, 2 seats and aircon + gps.

    Straight pipes too.
