Desperate Help Needed: 348 Transmission still not back together

    Well finally got everything taken care of today and found that indeed as BillyBob expected the clutch shaft plugzit sent me was indeed the 10 spline setup. All I can say is FINALLY!! Thank god this crap box will be back together soon and I can finally begin terrorizing my Delta Vee suspension.

    Now on to some pressing questions and pictures of the damage to my old stuff.

    First off this post has a picture of the three clutch shafts I have in my pocession at the moment. Now I want someone to tell me what the hell is that shaft on the left. Looking at the parts manuals I have (and Daniel can comment on what he has) every single picture or diagram I have shows the gear and clutch shaft as being a ten spline setup. Any intelligent people out there beyond me care to comment on what the difference is PLEASE PLEASE DO!

    So below. Clutch shaft on left is thin splined clutch shaft that is labled on the shaft as 145427. Clutch shaft in the middle is my old one where you can see the splines are chewed all to hell with the gear wobbling on the shaft. That crap is hardened steel and I am amazed how it ate though everything..looks like FBB going to town on a pizza according to witnesses. Finally the clutch shaft on the far right is the one from plugzit and is the one that is going into my car. :)

    My question to Brian, Tom Jones, Tom Bakowsky, et. al:

    Shaft on the left is labeled as 145427 (a 348 shaft) with thin splines. Even the 1994 books show the 145427 shaft with thick splines, and doesn't really supersede from/to anything else that makes sense.

    Question: WTF happened? Was it mislabled by Luigi?

    Is it such a suprise that the illustration has not been updated when the actual part is! I know in an ideal world it should be and just for the record it p@sses me that people don't address the whole gambit when introducing a mod. Reality is that figs in manuals are often overlooked. Text is addressed, but figs are a longer lead time to knock up so they will often be left as is, particularly if the detail affected by the change is relatively small such that many people won't look beyond the outline of the part and the text surrounding the assembly.

    In the Aero engine world I can recall many similar situations in RR parts catalogues where the text changed but the illustration would be so similar that it never got amended! I've also seen many GE and Pratt part cats and they both do it too!

    So, am I suprised that the 348 or any other F car illustrations for different assembly schemes show the same spline layout, not at all.

    Very cool JJ. How did you know that shaft anf gear went bad? Could you feel the play? The gear teeth themselves were o.k. but it was the internals that work messed up? Was the old stake ring staked down but backed out causing play?

    FBB - Knew the gear was gone or something was amiss because when you would put it in gear and start to move it would give me a clunk and this sort of rattle noise. So put it up on stands and just started moving the wheel with the tranny in 1st back and forth and you could feel something slopping around. Just had to do more diagnostics from there and eventually found it through process of elimination.

    Both the gear and the shaft chewed themselves up. The splines on the gear about 1/3 gone while the shaft is about 1/2 gone. If you just put the gear on the shaft and move it back and forth you can very clearly hear the clunk I heard in the car every time I got off and back on the gas but more so starting off in 1st.

    Anyway this adventure is about behind me.

    I still want someone to answer Daniels questions above as well because I dont get all the different shaft fun and would love to know if that shaft is really for ANY 348 out there.

    I know its a very old thread, but maybe someone reading the archives is still interessted in it. I got the same shaft in my 348 with the thin splines and mine is labeld with 145562. Wich is referenced as F355 Clutch Shaft. Maybe it was just labeled wrong?
