    I've been getting this message alot lately in the lower left hand corner of IE, with no joy when I want to load a webpage. At first I thought it was the DSL connection so I kept rebooting it (turn off modem, unplug router, turn on modem, wait, plug in router) And that usually worked. This was about a twice daily routine.

    But, I have another computer on the same router and today, when I got the "detecting proxy settings" message, I checked the other computer and it was working fine.

    So, maybe a setting or something on the browser on this specific computer?

    Check your "Lan Settings" under the connections

    Tools-->Internet Options-->Connections--Lan Settings-->Automatic Configuration. Make sure it's not checked

    It was indeed checked. I unchecked it. Many thanks.
