    Hi all,

How would one determine bios compatibilty for an upgraded internal hard drive? According to gateway I have the newest bios update, but that one was from '03.... Can you go into the bios and poke around there to see what it could handle? Or would that be cmos settings I go into? How does one go into cmos settings or bios?

    Thanx for your time!

BIOS settings are not going to tell you. Release notes *might* but not always.

It is much easier to look it up on the site to see what it can handle. Which model do you have?

Keep in mind, they are going to tell you only what the max size which shipped with the system, not what it could handle. External drives might be a better option.

    Hi all,

I appreciate your thoughts on the matter! ;) .......

I have a Select 1100, gateway, with an MSI Athlon 1.1ghz motherboard, part # 2512594... OEM drive part #, 5501811.. How does one find out what manufacturer made their bios, cuz the gateway support site doesn't say that..... Thanx again!

    P.S., Almost forgot, model # ATXSTF-OXN-SELECT 1100......

By just looking at this article: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,30547,00.asp
And knowing it came out in late 2000, I can tell you most drives out there will not work with this one. I would either get a firewire card and use a firewire drive (for speed) or just use a USB drive for ease of simplicity. The bus *might* be an ATA66, but unsure. You'll still need to find an EIDE drive that would work. All drives will work, but they might not recognize the entire drive and you will only be allocated so much.
