This is a shot in the dark, but I'm moving to Dallas in July to attend SMU Law School part-time in the evenings. I've been contacting local financial services and energy companies to secure a job before I make the move.

I am 22 years old, have a BS in Entrepreneurship and a minor in Financial Services Management; NASD Series 7 license; have started 3 companies since I was 16; have been studying investment techniques since I was 15; would like to eventually run my own private equity fund dealing with oil & gas, real estate, and medical investments.

If anyone has any contacts in financial services, I would appreciate any help available in getting my resume and name out there. I'm originally from Houston, so I'm looking forward to the move back.

    Jason,
Good approach, but maybe mingling first will help. Get involved in the area, figure out where you who you want to work with or for, then just pester them until they either hire you or have a restraining order placed against you. I'm serious. Don't ask; take. If you have the drive & guts you will do well.

I am Series 6, 6.3, & Group 1 certified; no 7 yet. I decided to follow or different path in mortgage lending with Countrywide. I have been in lending, finance & more for over 9 years. Call me if you want to chat & BS over lunch. I can give you some ideas if nothing else.

    PM for cell #.....

    Jason,

USE SMU TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!!!!!!!!! I'm studying at Cox right now getting my MBA and due to graduate in December! They have an incredible network at the school. Get involved with as much as you can. Look me up when you get here..... let's grab a beer!

George, I've been in touch with a few people at Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse, so hopefully those leads will develop. I'd like to get my Series 3 and 4 as soon as possible so I can get further into futures and options trading.

    Tim, email sent.

Jay, I'll shoot you a message when I get down there. I've got an apartment lined up at Gables Turtle Creek if that's anywhere near you. How's the business school working out? I've got one friend down there in undergrad and another at Dedman.

Unfortunately, as of writing my post, I received notice that I was waitlisted at Dedman, but I've decided to move down to Dallas regardless and just try to work with the dean and get my name on the accepted list.

Thanks for all the advice, gents.

Turtle creek isn't too far from me. Campus sort of sits in between my place and Gables, where you'll be living. I'm maybe ten miles from you, as the crow flies. Turtle Creek is a nice area.

SMU Cox has been an incredible experience. I have a couple friends there that are doing a dual degree at Dedman and Cox; I don't envy their workload at all. It's a lot of work regardless of the degree (Cox or Dedman), but worth it (hopefully) in the end. I'm looking forward to graduation, but in the end, I think I'll miss the challenges of earning the degree and the interactions with my colleagues on a daily basis. Once you get into town, I would recommend going to campus and meeting with the admissions director face to face. You may be able to make some headway with them on a face to face level. Good luck with the move!

    Jay

Yea, I'm flying home to Houston on May 22 and planning to drive up to Dallas for a weekend for some interviews and to meet with the Director of Admissions at Dedman. My lease at Gables doesn't start until the end of July, so I'm hoping to do some traveling to Peru and alittle R&R in Houston for a few weeks during the summer.

I'll send you a message when I head up to meet with the Dean. Get a little SMU/F-Chat lunch going.

I am an SMU law alum. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the law school. As you will learn, course outlines are a hot commodity for first year students. I have kept all of my course notes and outlines for most classes you will take in your first year and I would be happy to get you copies once you know what classes you will be taking.

    Good luck!

Fidelity has 4,500 in Westlake right now and adding another 3,000 more over coming years. Not sure the most exciting FS job, good training, average pay, but you're basically just answering Bubba's 401k questions.

    Roger that...

Jason, do you want to be an "employee"? Or, are you more interested in an opportunity that requires an entrepreneurial flair? Big difference.

I'd like to get involved in wealth management, private placements, and/or bond trading. My lastest passion has been arbitrage though, but I think I might have to be in NYC for that.

But to answer your question, something more entrepreneurial in nature. I think working with VCs or angels would be right up my alley, considering my undergrad.
