My wife and I will be spending most of this next summer in DFW as I'll be interning in Dallas. Her family lives right north of Ft Worth, and we're trying to decide if it would be better to rent in Dallas or live for free with her family.

What would be the commute time from Haslet (where the speedway is) to downtown Dallas (Bank One building)? I'd probably be going home between 6-9pm.

On one hand, I'm thinking the hours would be worth another $1k+/mo in expenses, on the other I'm thinking free is nice - I have time but need money.

My commute is very similar to that. I go Southlake to North of downtown every day. Haslett is maybe another 5-10 minutes.

It all depends on time of day. I go 114 over, but you would go 183. 183 is known for backing up during rush hour.

Haslet to downtown (7:30am to 8:30am or 4pm to 6:30pm) = 45-70 minutes one way.

Haslet to downtown (leaving before 6:45am or after 6:30pm) = 35-50 minutes.

Late at night with zero traffic I can go from Southlake to downtown in an easy 25-30 minutes.

Its tough and gets old, but I would take the money.

that would be a ***** of a commute. I had one that was 22 miles and took over 1 hour. A couple weeks of that EACH WAY and you'll pay any price to not have to commute.

Every time I drive to Ft Worth I forget just how far over there it is. The rental market is soft in dallas so you should be able to find something reasonable. I know of some funky loft for rent just 3 minutes from Bank1 building. Not sure on price.

Ryan, I have been in Cambridge, and I have been in Dallas. The commute in Dallas will blow your mind.

However, it really will not matter. You'll be leaving to go to work at 4:30 am, and leaving the office at 9:30 pm. So who cares? What makes you think that you are going to have a life during this internship?

    Ouch. The truth hurts.

Cicerino - I'll be with the "Rambo lawyers" Bickel & Brewer doing complex commercial litigation.

I'll agree w/ Rob, figure at LEAST an hour each way.

My commute is 23 miles, but it takes 45 mins to an hour each way. Unless I work late, then it's only 25 mins.
