Hey there. As you all may know, the Attorney General of Texas has ruled that Poker Runs are illegal. Therefore, our 4th Annual Poker Run is now the Primavera Texana del Motore run (literally, "Texan Cars in Springtime"). The Poker Run was always a competition. The Primavera run could be, if we chose to make it one: we could do a scavenger hunt like the fall, or a time/distance thing, or something. However, a competition requires an extra insurance rider, usually about $300/event, plus the cost of trophies and such (usually another $150-300) Alternatively, we could get rid of the plaques and trophies, and just make it a fun run similar to the Boardwalk one this past weekend. If we went down this route we wouldn't have the shiny bits to hand out, but the entry costs would drop to just cover Tshirts/Posters. Opinions? We're here to do what you want
My preference is for a competitive event in lieu of just a drive. My idea of a rally is to have a nice drive incorporated with an element of challenge. Q & A rallies are common so why not break from the norm and do a TSD rally? Granted the later requires more personnel and precise timing at the checkpoints but could be lots of fun. A suggestion to go along with a TSD rally would be say that no computers would be used so everyone runs equal. Carol
I agree that a TSD rally would be entertaining, but I really don't think we have the personnel to carry that off. Just my opinion. I'm also concerned that something that restricted would not fit the dominant personality of the chapter
I'd advocate some element of competition as well. Can we come up with a "Laid Back TSD" or "Lazy TSD" (Lazy Texas Southern Drawl )... bring in some of the driving challenge of TSD, but avoid any complexities that might make people's heads hurt. For example, have a "par time" but don't tell people what it is beforehand... just tell them the criteria for computing it. Then there's no reason for people to have precise timers... they just try to figure out what the time is by driving it... but in the end, they could guess and win. So, the "driving by the criteria" is just helping you guess better. Or some such "laid back", but "more stimulating than just a Sunday drive" concept.
I liked the 'competitiveness' of the poker run, in that you could win something but it didn't require any thought on my part. I'm in it for the drive.
T-shirts would be fine instead of trophies if that helps keep the costs down to increase participation. Also, are non-Ferrari modifications such as curb feelers, low-rider kits, and "Selena" window sticker required for this drive?
Brian's idea is a great one. A TSD rally really does require a large number of people to pull it off successfully. From what I have seen on the previous Poker Runs, with this crowd a drive to Braums for ice cream would become a competitive event.
Here is a shrunken down preview of the design for the back of the tshirt. I made the text subtle as not to pull the eye away from the image. There will be a logo for the breast of the shirt as well. Comments? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Excellent concept! Kinda like the Monterrey poster, but with bluebonnets thrown in. Good blur on the sign and nice curvy road. I'll take one!
How is this for the front? I wanted something 'Springy' but not effeminate. It'll be about 3" x 2". Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here we go, the key to our competition this spring. This makes it a game of skill, and thus bypasses the Attorney General's objections Image Unavailable, Please Login
