My experiment with putting my Texas Tech son in a '91 850I ended this week. I know I was crazy to try this, but always loved the look of these cars, and thought I might squeeze 2 years out of it. Would be a great weekend car, but not a daily driver. Put about $7k in it since November, all items that will help it. 6speed car with tons of service records from 3 owners. Wanted to let the local group have a chance before I let Hayes put it on the market. Looking for low $20's. E-mail me if you are interested. 88k miles, and drives very well. The best news is he's hooked on shifting now. Getting 6sp G35 tomorrow thanks to son-in-law discount.

My neighbor has an oil business up there, and he is the one that bought it from a guy down the block and put a paint job on it and sold it to me. Not that kind of gray market.

I've been thinking of these a lot lately. Why do you say it's not a daily driver?

These were the first of the heavy electronics cars where it remembered your driving style, etc. There is just a lot to go wrong. So far most of mine has been small, like a recent wiper motor. There was not a new one in the US, but found a refurbished one finally. It might be fine now, but being in Lubbock with no good shops like Dallas Eurocars, I can't risk it laying down again. I will rephrase. Not an everyday driver for a fairly responsible 20 year old. Would do better in older hands. Knew that when I bought it, just loved the look of the car so much I wanted to make it work. For me it's not as quick as I would want, which surprised me for a 12 cylinder. It would really shine on the road. Still looks a little like the M1 to me, which is my favorite BMW of all time.

I have a 91 850i Dinan BMW and it could be very much a daily driver? Never broke down since I have owned it. I think you son missed out on a great opportunity to have a nice ride. i know they are gas hogs and can be fickle. I am fortuante not to experieinced anything other than minor maintenance issues for the life of the car. I will never sell the car. My wife drives it and loves the car much more than the Ferrari.
