http://www.ci.arlington.tx.us/park/hockey/index.html I've been playing rec-level roller hockey for several seasons at Elzie Odom rec center in Arlington. I skipped this past season but Josh (Supercarlover) and I are going to try to join the same team next season, so I thought I'd see if there was anybody else interested in playing on a team with Josh and I. The next season starts November 16, and will last for about 3 months. The games are on Sunday nights in North Arlington and there are no required practices, so time commitment is minimal. No hockey experience necessary, but you at least need to be comfortable on rollerblades. Typically it's 18-45 y.o. guys that play. Cost is $65 per person (cheap!), and if you have absolutely no gear, you can get outfitted for under $300 if you do it smart, I can help with that. There's a captains meeting on Nov. 6, and I need to decide before then whether to start my own team or try to join another. So if you're interested in playing, let me know!
I'm in. A Ferrari-chat team. How cool would that be? Also, for those who have been out of the sport, or would like to learn in a non-competitive atmosphere, there is an open skate night at Breakaway Hockey in Arlington. They do play hockey, but its very relaxed, with a variety of skills showing up. I think its $10 a night, which isn't bad for 2 hours. I'll double check on it....but just a thought.
Ooohh... I'm needing something to keep my nearing-40 physique in shape.. and this might be just the thing. I'll see if my schedule allows it.
Cool! Make sure your schedule realy is clear, because there's nothing worse than playing shorthanded. BTW, If a holiday falls near a sunday there's usually no games, and usually superbowl sunday is a bye week for everyone. Usually. Anybody else? Manuel, Will, I'm looking in your direction.
I just saw this... It sounds cool... I got some rollerblades and safety gear that might need some dusting. What else do I need? It can be a cool activity to take little Natalie to and with enough Aleve for me, it might even be pain free!! I'll check my schedule and let you know. Also let's see if Jason and David come out and play
Here's some examples of inexpensive starter equipment. Just like anything else, it's easy to sepnd way more than you need to in order to buy start-up gear. (I wouldn't recommend buying stuff off of ebay unless you go to a brick-and-mortar store to get sized first.) Bare minimum of equipment required: (these are just examples, not endorsing these ebay sellers or the brands, in fact, these are mostly off-brand.) Roller Hockey girdle (to protect hips, buttbone, and thighs) Hockey gloves, shinguard/kneepad, elbow pads, and helmet (cage optional but recommended) roller hockey pants (to fit over the girdle and shin/kneepads) Lace up roller hockey skates (lace up is absolutely necessary, no cheap plastic turnbuckles) Stick (don't buy one off ebay, got to oshmans or something. Optional: Shoulder pads Let me help you pick your gear, if you want to join us. Kind of like buying an Italian car, you need someone to guide you through the process and avoid common mistakes that will make the experience painful.
Musn't forget a cup!! I don't care what the rulebook says regarding whether or not its "required"....its required! Period. End of story. Dang it...they outlawed my Plastic-Buckle skates. And those were the most comfortable too. Every other pair I tried to play with (lace-up) were horrible. Oh well....back to E-bay!
Todd, you might try Play-it-Again sports. They usually have some decent used equipment. If you're willing to buy new stuff, try some of the local hockey shops like Breakaway in Arlington. I don't know of any others, although I'm sure there are a few. Academy and Oshman's will have some stuff, but not nearly the selection that a dedicated hockey store would.
Well, I will need new skates, mine don't meet the requirements. I'll do those new, but will look to PIAS to see about the protective gear.. I'll probably do the cup new too.. That might be prudent.
Typically the cup is built into the girdle, which is why I didn't mention it. But yeah, unless you like singing soprano, it's a must! And I too recommend PIAS.
THe plastic buckle skates aren't "outlawed" but they are just not up to the task at hand. Laceups will offer far more support and are less likely to fail in the heat of battle. Josh, what size shoe do you wear? All else fails, I might have a set of skates for you.
Well, for one, the strapped ones have already lasted me a season (mind you, that was two and a half years ago. I wear a size 9.5 - 10 shoe. I've got a couple lined up on Ebay. We'll see what happens. The lace-up pair I do have are bent a little, and because of that, a couple wheels won't spin free. Nothing to worry about. I'll find something.
The cup reference was an attempt at humor, to speak that a new cup would probably be better than a used one..
I went and played pick-up hockey at Elzie Odom tonight (I got off work early). 5 guys were there. We played for about 45 minutes. It was good. For those who want to get back into shape before the season...come join us. Get there like 7:50 or so...get dressed, and get on the court. Usually costs $7, but they didn't charge us tonight 'cause they were only going to let us play one hour, and there wasn't someone they could spare to stay until 10. So.....it was a free night. Good stuff. Come join!
DOH! I should have gone. How did you feel in your skates? Did they give enought support? That's my main concern with skates that don't lace up. If they felt good to you, don't listen to my advice and stick with what works for you.
Well, they were better than the two pairs of lace-up skates I tried on. But...I'm looking at a pair of Nike's online. I do prefer lace-up.....I just need to find something that works. You gonna try to be there next week?
I snagged some Nike skates off of eBay. $88 including shipping. Hopefully they'll work out. Look forward to next Wednesday.
Don't forget, guys. Hockey tonight up at Elzie Odom at 8 p.m. I'm going to be there around 7:45 or so. Look forward to seeing you all out there.
