I had two close calls with The Man this morning. Leaving the house for work I have to go down this farm road to get to the 35W. Just last night I was thinking, "I've never seen a cop on this road."

Well, this morning I come over a hill and there is a Sheriff lengthwise across the road about 50 yards ahead, pulling out of a dusty driveway with his lights on - I brake hard thinking he somehow tagged me that quickly and he's pulling out to make a roadblock. But they turned and went and nabbed a truck that had already passed them.

Then, 10 minutes later I'm on the 170 in Trophy Club in a long line of traffic - I'm at the tail of the line and we're all doing about 60-65 in a 55. We all sail past a bike cop, who pulls out behind me and slowly comes up to the line of cars. I think I'm toast. Everyone pulls into the left lane, the bike cop comes up behind me for a few seconds, then pulls alongside me (I'm thinking, "ok, where's my registration"), then miraculously he speeds up and passes me, and then pulls over the car in front of me!

Maybe it was my MA plates, or maybe he saw my law school sticker in my window and thought I would certainly fight a ticket. Either way, I was extra good for the rest of the drive.

Here is my morning commute as described to Jennie...

Traveling in the left lane of 114 by DFW as I usually do traffic was coming the other way at normal speeds. I noticed a car in their left lane skidding sideways, it skidded into the dirt, nailed a light pole, and then rolled over. I wasn't at risk because there are dividers there, but all that happened right in front of me. Hope they made it, hard hit and the car was pretty flat coming to rest on its roof.

At 114 there by Love field I was traveling in the right lane. Two ladies were feeding pigeons at the bus stop. I could see it coming, they threw food in the road up ahead and the pigeon went for it. One couldn't get out of the way from my speeding BMW. I nailed that thing so hard with the front bumper and feathers went everywhere with a thump. The funniest was looking at the rear view and seeing these two ladies holding their hands to their head in shock. I bet they feel pretty bad and responsible for it.

My very first hour here, driving from the airport to my new home, i got a speeding ticket. Then a week later I was pulled over for not making a complete stop. (We call it a California Stop) but he let me off with a warning. Now Im so paranoid that I just set my cruise control and let everyone pass me.

the same way companies are busting butt to get things out the door to make their numbers, the revenue generators of Texas are out there meeting quota. typically the last two weeks of every quarter you will see more cops out there protecting us.

Haha...I've been doing the same exact thing when I drive on the 190 Turnpike ever since I got a ticket back in February.

I saw them all over the place in Houston today. I think they are out enforcing the seatbelt laws. I recall hearing news on some big push about enforcement of those laws. Probably a good time to make sure your inspection is up to date and any applicable tag renewals are done. In Houston the cops like to set up shop under U turns for interstates...the audience is rather captive.

    Cruise control? What's that? :)

You'd better start driving without it or you are going to have quite an adjustment when you get that f-car.

Just this morning a Bronco pulled out in front of me onto the highway and I swerved around him and passed him. He then passed me back, and I was thinking to myself I should just grow up, fall into the line of traffic and take it easy (because, being a man, I generally dislike being passed). So I slowed up, moved left and let him push his way up the right lane.

About 3 miles later, a bike cop pulled him over.

Kinda like Back to the Future 2 where he decides not to race (and would have hit the Rolls). ;)

    Quite a while, actually. :)

I can't believe how policed the roads are here. Even on a Saturday, coming in to downtown I saw about 4 people pulled over.

If less than 25 over or so and not in construction, you can probation/defer it.

I will try that, hopefully they will let me with an out-of-state license.

Of course, the worst part is that I'm in a line of cars in the left lane, with an motorcycle and a crazed Saturn passing me on my left. 10 seconds later we crest the hill at the Kimball exit, and the cop picks me.

    Damn Southlake cops! :)

Don't tell my insurance agent, but I was deferred in 3 major towns along 114 at one time (Southlake, Grapevine, and Irving).

I haven't added it up, but I think I go through like 87 municipalities on my way to work, and each of course is trying to maximize it's own revenue.

Oh well, at least it was just speeding and not for the 4-wheel drift I did the other night at an empty downtown intersection.
