I experienced my first little glitch the other day in the Diablo (96 VT)), first and hopefully last as Im selling for a 6.0. After speaking with a friend, he said it was probably nothing to be too concerned about i.e. mechanical. It seemed too irregular. Basically I was driving the car hard along a nice empty country road, opening it up a bit, first time I had actually given it a bit of welly and it sounded great. Anyway, got onto motorway and was just cruising at 80mph for 5 minutes, the car jerked back once and the check engine (L + R) light came on (they have never came on at any time in over a year of owning, car has been perfect), the temps and pressures were just fine, I just let the car slow down and then slowly applied the accelerator and it still had power. I slowed down to about 40mph and came off at the next sliproad, the light went off and all sounded ok, gauges were fine so I continued on. It happened again about 4 miles down the motorway and one last time again some 2 or 3 miles down the road before parking in my garage.

Next day, I checked all levels, oil was a bit low but i topped it up. Took it out for a 30 mile run a few days later and all good. Next day, it did this ‘splutter’ when sitting for a few minutes warming up, lights went on again, levels and gauges ok. Its done it a few times, again after long intervals say 10 or 15 minutes. A few days after that it did a 50 mile journey just fine.

Anything spring to mind as to what it may be? Lambda sensors (i know nothing about, just hear people mentioned it)? Seems temperamental. How would one diagnose the issue?

It is just recently out of a 5 month, down to bare metal restoration, it is now back in that garage to have some lost buttons replaced and the rear right radiator fan fixed as it came out powerless. After that there is a 10 mile journey to the service centre who will probably be fixing it, whatever it is but does anyone have any ideas?

    Appreciate any help :)

    Dear Lamborghinisti,

To me, it sounds like your cats are overheating and the thermocouples are telling the engine to retard the ignition or shut the engine down.

Before we jump to any conclusions, you have the benefit of OBD II. You can hook up a scanner to the port (in the right side driver foot well just below the steering wheel) Once your scanner is hooked up, you can pull the code. Since Lambo codes are not stored in the scanner, you can go to www.lamboweb.com and look up the code. It will tell you what the computer picked up.

Then we can go from there..... :)

Well, I have found that O2 sensors are often culprits in Italian cars. They foul easily and then cause the engine retarding that Shamile mentioned. If you want to get an idea as to the health of your motor, pull the plugs and take a look at them. That will tell a lot. Make sure you label them (best bet is to stick them into - as in push them through - a cardboard shoebox that is labeled for each plug).

Thanks, thats really handy to know. The chap at the place says he has a computer so I'll ask him for more informattion as dont want to spend hours and hours trying to diagnose etc. They do work on Lambos but not a dealer.

Ive no experience of computer or scanner diagnosis but hope it is fairly simple and accurate. Would the problem have to have just occurred to get a reading or is there like a time/memory log?

Car is going in for a full service when checking for issue, new plugs and filters etc. Do you think it would be best doing the service first to see if the problem clears?

Are the O2 sensors the same as lambda sensors?

    Cheers :)
