I know the greatest percentage of Ferrari historians visit this forum over the other forums, so I'll ask this question here.

I have only seen reference to it once, in this documentary:
    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7082681911727652752&q=ferrari&hl=en

Please see the clip beginning at the 27:00 mark of this video.

Are there any written references to Enzo really saying this?(Forgive the grammar/spelling of my transcription)

"Castellotti il morto. Dispiace. E la Macchina?"

He never liked his racers ...did he?

I wonder how many Ferrari drivers passed away?

I'm aware of both RODRIGUEZ BROTHERS being F.drivers
and also they both died behind the wheel

BUT I' don't know if they were driving Ferraris in those tragic moments

    does anyone know?

Check out Piloti Che Gente for the best perspective of his views.

Although there was a wide range of relationships, from the senior drivers that were his peers, thru Fangio, to Hawthorne and Collins, see Mon Ami Mate for that story, on thru to the modern era, where I think he liked Villenueve and others that had the "all or nothing" attitude...

Michelle Alboreto wrote a touching tribute in the 1988 Racing Yearbook on his passing, noting his straightforward simplicity when it came to racing. Now, of course he has 'gone ahead' as well.......

I don't think he was as callous as that quote makes it sound, this was also an era where the total loss of a car was a HUGE financial setback for the Factory.

    Different men, different times........

I'd like to nudge this thread back on track.

Is it documented in writing anywhere that Enzo made a statement like this? Or is it another one of the old "Cart pulls the horse" and "You buy the engine, the rest you get for free" urban legends attributed to Enzo?

Very true, but HE could not drive them, so it was a necessary evil, the drivers, I suppose.

Actually the "Cart pulls the horse" quote is NOT an urban legend. The true story is recalled by noted designer Gioachino Colombo. (Quote) In May 1937 I had arrived at Modena with a well defined plan in mind; to build a small car with a rear engine, a kind of miniature Auto Union ... Enzo Ferrari listened very carefully to my proposal ... And then he vetoed the whole scheme. "No" he said "it's always been the ox that pulls the cart."(/quote)
Needless to say the mini AU didn't get built.

Brock Yates book indicates that Enzo said something to this effect when Castelloti was killed.

Not only that.... but Enzo apparently was so upset by the entire episode he felt it was his sacred duty to "comfort" the hot young model girlfriend that Castellotti left behind... It would seem that for Enzo, racing cars was his SECOND passion, behind chasing tail!

(posting from memory.... I may be confusing with Musso)

Regarding Enzo's "statement". Seems appropriate to me! (Of course, I call all my drivers "steering wheel spacers"!)

Drivers are a dime a dozen, but a really good race car..............

Enzo Ferrari was a man that I immensely admired, but he could be his worst ennemy at time.
A friend of mine, Briffaud, was at some point working for George Filipinetti (Swiss Maserati & Ferrari importer and distributor), owner of the Scuderia Filipinetti, that raced Ferraris and Porsches. He told me this story.
In 65, Filipinetti, after much negotiations with Ferrari, bought at 365P2, to be raced alongside the team 250LM. At Monza, the car driven by Tomy Spychinger crashed and was destroyed, killing its driver. Spychinger, who had not practised with full tank, was caught out under braking as he approached the Parabollica on his first lap out after taking over from Herbie Muller; not wearing safety harness, he was decapitated by the windscreen as the car hit the bank.
Filipinetti asked to Ferrari for a replacement, to be told that the factory couldn't provide one in time for Le Mans, where Filipinetti had an entry accepted. Ford was looking for extra entries and Filipinetti accepted to sell his, providing Muller got a drive and the car run in Filipinetti's colours.
One day Briffaud was in the office, when a call came from Maranello, apparently from the Commendatore himself, enquiring about the entry for Le Mans; Ferrari had one American client who wanted to race there, and knowing that Filipinetti had an entry but no car, he thought that he could have a deal.
The conversation was not easy: Ferrari spoke Italian and a bit of French, and Briffaud French with a bit of Italian! With as much tact as possible, Briffaud tried to explain that the entry was taken, and that Scuderia Filipinetti was running a Ford now. In the context of the time, with Ferrari having rebuked Ford in its offer to buy him out, and now Ford attacking Ferrari on the tracks, Enzo Ferrari went red, started swearing, cursing Filipinetti as a traitor and finished the outburst by saying: "Tell Filipinetti that he will never sell any cars from me in future!".
Ferrari kept his word, Filipinetti lost the Ferrari franchise and started to sell and race Fords and Cobras.

I seem to remember the Enzo was very distraught when Gilles Villeneuve was killed.

As a team owner, if you allowed the death of your driver to affect you too greatly, you may not want to continue racing. Racing is not just a passion, it is after all, a business.
