I've been trying to find this info, but have had no luck. I was just wondering if every 308 GT4 had sodium filled exhaust valves... if early ones did not or if euro cars did not.

all ferraris and lambos had sodium filled exhaust valves until the 90's. in 85 the 308QV the Lambo Jalpa and the Countach had sodium filled valves. i dont think the Testarossa used sodium filled valves. all of the 512 B.Boxers had them too.

All of the 2 valve 308's had them (the GT4, the carbed 308 and the early non-QV injected 308s). However I thought the 308 QV's DIDN'T have them. Reaper, are you sure?

    Hi,

QVs do not have the sodium-filled exhaust valves...

It's only 2V cars that have them. QV's do not.

ALL 2V 308 and BB have them (including the 2V injected and BBi cars).

Also, not 100% sure, but I "think" 365GT/4 2+2, 400's and Daytonas all have them too...

QVs are fitted with: "exhaust valves are of 'nimonic' alloy, already well tested on Formular 1 and used for the first time by Ferrari on production engines."

Pistons and aluminium liners treated with the elektrochemical process 'nikasil'.

Why move the thread? The GT4 is definitely a "classic"

Thank you guys for your replies. I read the links posted by wax and am still not sure a "Euro" spec GT4 has them or not... but am now confident that my US spec 75 308 GT4 did originally have sodium filled valves, which is what I really needed to know.

Now, I've seen a couple places posted where people have used "ss valves and brass guides, from S I Industries in Simi Valley, Ca". Does anyone know the weights of the original intake and exhaust valves for the carbureted 308? (and if so, any weight specs from aftermarket companies? I'm going to call S I Industries later today about theirs.)

    Thanks again,
    Chris

After having one of my valves break and tear things up, I looked at Ferrea and SI valves, but ended up taking Carobu's recommendation to use Zanzi sodium valves that are the ones I believe Ferrari and numerous Nascar teams use.
I can get you more details if you'd like.

    Regards,

So, are you using sodium filled valves as a replacement?

That's utterly unnecessary if the air pump is no longer working. They were only needed to cool the valves on air injected cars, as they run much higher temperatures due to the "re-burn".

A non air injected car has no need for valve stem cooling via sodium.
