Install new NAPA battery. 34R. Pic There was an arc when connecting the red bullet to the positive terminal and every system seemed to turn on. Wiper, locks. Smoke near the front of the engine. Pull the Red bullet fast. Cry. Reinstall the older battery. Everything seems normal for a second No beeping when the key is in the ignition. Car will not start. No spark at the coil The dash lights are all off except the low battery light. Where do I start? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Holy ****. Red is black, black is red. I had the terminals switched. Working fine now. I'm going to throw up.
I think I blew every fuse that is not required for the car to run. All the gauges are dead. Radio. AC.
I got gauges back with a new fuse. No radio yet.....Who cares. I'm guessing there is a fuse on the back of the unit. AC is working but the fan is on constant high. Any ideas?
I need you to pretend to care about my emotional state. I died inside for about 20 minutes. Sure it is because I'm too dumb to live, but I need sympathy and that beer you promised me if my Ferrari explodes.
Good thing the 355 electronics are relatively simple if this was a 360 or 439 your wallet would be doubled over in pain right now
The radio fuse (at the back) has probably blown. As for the AC fan, its speed controller may have been fried. Smoke from the front of the engine could have been from the alternator (its diodes may have been fried). Check the operation of the alternator - measure the voltage on the battery when the engine is idling and the cooling fans and headlights are on. If you get at least some 13.5 volts, the alternator has survived but you have to monitor it for some time. If you get low voltage on the battery (~12V or less), you will need to replace the alternator's rectifier and voltage regulator.
I’d have crapped my pants. You’re brave to admit what you did to this “wretched hive of scum and villainy”. Good on you for getting it (mostly) sorted. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
At idle she is sitting at 12V with the new battery. No big change with RPM. I'm guessing that means the alternator is done...? Alternator repair shop, rebuild with Ernie's thread, or do you think it is it junk? Thanks Ernie for this thread. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/348-alternator-removal-rebuild.142329/page-2 Image Unavailable, Please Login
I am sure an alternator repair will fix it and be your most economic solution Sent from my moto g power using Tapatalk
Is the AC fan speed controller part of the center console computer, or is there somewhere else I should be looking?
Thank you. I did check that as I had already upgraded that a year back. The fan is running at full speed. The AC computer LEDs look normal; like it is trying to select the speed, but the fan is constantly on full speed from the time the car ignition is engaged. I can hear the AC compressor kick in when I select that button, but I just can't get the fan to stop. I popped the fuse out for now to keep it from running while I check all the other systems. I'm down to that one problem assuming the alternator repair goes as planned.
Maybe this will help https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/hvac-fan-keeps-running.383590/ Sent from my moto g power using Tapatalk
Super helpful thread. I'll be checking the fan power supply tonight. I'll be looking for a short in that module; as it would keep the fan on full if it is shorted, and clearly my genius ass shorted some ****. That thread took me to this one as well. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/hvac-fan-keeps-running.383590/
The 348 can handle a battery being installed wrong. It is not without damage, and smoke, but it did not die. Thank God. The Red bullet connector got me to do the dumbest thing you can do to your 348, so if you are changing the battery please disregard the red bullet connector as a sign of positive or negative. Both connectors are RED. The positive goes to the starter then alternator after the red bullet connector. The negative bolts to the frame. Don't be me; don't trust the Red. Parts that fried. Alternator. 155785 , 101211-5071 The Regulator and Rectifier burned up in a big cloud of smoke. Great thread here https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/348-havac-problem.531155/ I tried rebuilding my controller, but ended up having m.stojanovic build me a new one that is working great. I can't thank him enough for the support. Instrument fuse, and radio fuse also fried. Today my 348 is fully operational again. So glad to hear your car is back, and your post is super helpful. I'm glad other members were able to lend a hand- it makes it even more worth it.
So, did you paint the negative ones black? In fact, I am currently selling on Ebay black bullet connector housings I removed from my 348 (due to modification). See them here: Ferrari 348 Battery Cable Connector Housings | eBay Image Unavailable, Please Login
Maybe a 1989 issue. Maybe a repair from long past that cut a corner. The plug is not painted. They are both Red on my 348.
