I had just got back to the marina where I'm staying. There was a picnic-type gathering of some sort going on with maybe 10-12 people that were visiting some folks on a boat here. When I pulled into my parking space 7-8 of them came over to look at the car, asking questions, etc. One kid, maybe 10 years old said, "Can I have a ride?" His dad turned to him and said, "Mitch, that's rude!" I looked at the kid and said, "You want a ride? Get in!" Looking at his dad I added, "If it's OK with your dad..." It was so we blasted down HWY 50 for 3-4 miles, almost to the Chesapeake Bay bridge, turned around and came back.

When he got out he said thanks and ran back to the group, using the word "awesome" more times in 10 seconds than I think I have ever heard it in my entire life! His dad thanked me saying it was a really nice thing to do. I did the "Aw shucks, it was nothin'" routine and they invited me over for burgers and beer! So I got a free meal and drinks for maybe a dollars worth of gas. Hmmm, maybe I'm onto something! :)

Nice story. Hmm, I like burgers and beer - maybe I'll park up when I smell a bbq and see what I get :) although you don't get much fuel for a dollar over here :(

I took the old (79) guy who lives next door out for a blast last summer - he loved it!

"Anybody else asked for a ride?"

No, I got the impression after we got back that the parents of the two other kids told them not to ask. I didn't volunteer by asking if anyone else wanted a ride but if the other two kids had asked, I would have taken them. But then my meal would have cost around 3 bucks!

We're remodeling a house to move into, I've met neighbors across the street, a much younger couple with a 10 yr. old son. His mom told me a good part of his conversation is about when he gets to ride in my car.

Way to go. F-car owners too often get pegged as snobs. That kid will remember that and be telling his friends for years to come.

I actually gave a cop a ride in my GT40 the other day - we started chatting in Starbucks about cars and he said it was "the coolest damn car he's ever seen!" I said "right on, let's go for a ride!" I was just putting along and he said "stomp on it"....well, we were doing about double the speed limit in about 2 seconds. When we got back to Starbucks he was speechless. Now he and his cop partner honk and wave every time they see me on the street! Somehow I think they might just let me off a speeding ticket if they ever pulled me over.

It's always good to be friendly, and, being shy never got anyone anywhere.

That's what it's all about as far as I'm concerned. I never thought when I was a youngster I'd be lucky enough to own a Ferrari but I do, and I love sharing it with people, especially kids. I was at a car show today and didn't sit by my car the whole time, but every time I went back to grab something out of the car there were people asking questions and looking at it. I let a couple kids sit in it and passed out my club "trading" cards to those that wanted them. No rides today but I have in the past and will again in the future!

    Way to go!!

Good stories. Anytime a kid comes up to my cars and asks about it or takes the picture, I open the door and insist that they sit in it on the driver's side while I take a pic of them with their camera. Sometimes their parents are horrified at the thought of their kid breaking something and are like "Are you SURE??" or "I don't know that you want a young kid in that car, you don't know my kids and their ability to break stuff!!"

You can just tell that those kids are on cloud nine. Same way I used to be.

With the police, I am the same way. They are usually car fans and it never hurts to promote a little goodwill. We actually have a big group of us going to the Oakland PD Charity Car show in June. A few Oakland Police Officers were killed in the line of duty a few months ago and we are going to do what we can to help out at their event. They don't know it yet but we will have 30+ cars showing up. Can't wait to "give back" in honor of those officers having given their lives.

Excellent! I did that with a kid last summer outside a yogurt shop :) I really enjoy giving people rides; gave one to a Corvette fella as we were both getting gas about a month ago; his girlfriend followed us in the Vette and we cruised about two miles up the rode then he got out and went on his way with a big smile on his face. About ten years ago, a wonderful fellow named Sean gave me a ride in his 328, though I was a complete and total stranger. I always said that I would have that exact same mindset if I were ever fortunate enough to have an F-car. So, again, great job promoting goodwill via the Scuderia!

Thats how I ended up a Ferrari owner .

When I was 5 I dragged my mum to a Ferrari parked down the road from our house , , the owner was so impressed that I knew what the car was he gave me a toy Ferrari he had under his passenger seat. From that day on I had to have a Ferrari.
So 2 years ago I was in Bournemouth , UK buying my very first Ferrari , a 308 , The transaction took a few days (English are crap at paperwork) and every day I noticed a guy looking in the window of the dealers at my car. It turned out he was a Latvian migrant worker ,,,, the dealer used to shoo him away from car if he dared come in the door.
Well when the car was signed over I saw him looking and I invited him in to have a sit in the car and look all he wanted. It wasn't much, and he was sooooooooo thrilled to just sit in a Ferrari. I hope he now has a goal to buy one.

I went to Blackhorse Motors in west los angeles one day last year, just to look, and the manager there was a great guy, no pressure, even took me for a drive in a QV 308.

I eventually bought a very old, very cheap "salvage" 308 from a PP, but none the less, if I would ever need something from the dealer, these guys were great. Just real friendly, nice guys, car guys, like me. (and Ferrari service in Costa Mesa are nice guys too)

Okay, I guess I have to be the "party pooper" and ask; What father would allow his 10 year old child to go for a ride with a complete stranger unsupervised?

~ It was still a way cool gesture and everyone turned out better for it.

    IMHO
