Maybe known…..but I realized that the side air intakes in spider….are not only for the rad cooling, but also feeds directly the air boxes in the engine. There is an opening in the top section of the side inlet that connects to the hoses…….make sure those are connected tightly at the engine filter air boxes and the inlets.

Yes, the non Spider has separate dedicated ducts below the rear side windows. The spider feeds via the door intakes since there is no rear side window for ducts.

    Yes.

All 5.2 cars (so berlinetta and gts included) are like this as well.

For F355, only 2.7 cars have the ducting to the windows.

Why did Ferrari move the intake ducts on the 5.2? Are there any differences in noise between the two set ups?

^ I think because they didn't work right with the single maf. (I believe the intakes Y'ing together near it caused turbulence and erratic output)

I moved them to the windows on my previous 99gts and the engine would lay over/surge when driving in a crosswind.

I bought a new set a few years ago as mine were damaged (the fabric seemed to be disintegrating), but haven't got around to fitting them yet. You'd have to drop the radiators to get to the forward mounting bolt (probably best done on an engine-out).

Funny because a few years back a myth was circulated that on spiders, because the engine drew air from the side ducts, the engine would lay over or surge when the fans kicked because hot air would recirculate back into the engine intakes through the unshrouded corners of the radiators.

It really is amazing how much BS has been posted regarding these cars.

^ Yes, I think very unlikely. Seems much more likely just fan startup current increasing with age and engine reacting to load on the electrical system.

The factory stuff I calibrate has airflow adders vs cooling fan activation to offset this (and Ferrari likely does as well but wouldn't take into account older fan motors)

When I read about it, being fact oriented and owning a spider, I tape telltales all over the inlet ducts, started the car, let it idle to get hot and watched the behavior of the telltales as the fans cycled. They all went back towards the fans, even way up in the corners. Made a video of it, but I don't recall positing it. (I was more tolerant back then. :D) The engine didn't notice a thing. Still fine today. Not even a glitch due to the additional current load on the alternator/engine.

But you comment makes me thing that perhaps what that poster observed was due to a weak battery or dying alternator.
