Sometime in the past my GT4 got MSD's and timing controls, I am going back to points and finally got the stuff back together yesterday.

SUN stroboscope activated, .. 7 degrees advance on both dizzy's.. great, idle great, it splutters a a little but i still have to do the carbs..

Testrun.. cars runs lousy! Strobo lamp out.. 7 degrees, fine, 3000 rpm ... 7 degrees..!! not so fine... 4500 rpm, 7 degrees.. well, i should have understood that the timing controls where there for a reason!

The good thing is that the welds are very shallow and 10 minutes with the dremel tool will get the advance system operative, still i dont have the hardware. Anyone have this hardware (weights and spring etc) for sale? I am going superperfomance weight/spring kit unless i find original pieces in good condition.

This is a crime against nature! IMHO, it will be very difficult to restore that advance mechanism. Why? Because the grooves and the advance pins must have a "friendly relationship" that you are unlikely to restore with hand tools-the clearances are very important to allow the "pins" to move in and out as the distributor speed changes. If you can access a machine shop you might have a chance. Otherwise, find a new(another) shaft and the advance plate and pins. Occasionally, GT Carparts in Phoenix has some of this stuff; and I may have some extra weights--will PM you if I do. Also, it is much easier to set up the distributor on a Sun 504 or similar distributor machine than on the car. I invested in same just to keep my '79 308 healthy...good luck.

Thanks for the advice, dizzy 1 came out nice but I will have to machine polish the surface. They used a small cap to weld onto, on dizzy 2 i will sacrifice the cap and there will be less polishing.

I think it will be ok, at least I will try and see if the degrees come out right in the strobo.

Wow. The insane things people do to these poor cars simply out of ignorance.

Car #1 came with dual Crane crap. Holes drilled, wires cobbled together and ran helter skelter. It ran okay but it sure didnt look professional.

Car #2 came with dual MSD 6A's, triggered off stock points. Once again holes drilled, #8 wires ran unfused around the cracked fuel filler hose, another #8 wire ran direct off the battery, unfused, to power stereo junk. Ran okay until one of the MSD's would overheat, then sputters and explosions as the ignition came and went.

Everythings back to points now and will remain so. The stuff works just fine and is the most reliable ignition system money cant buy.

I think if you can carefully cut the cam loose, possibly sacrificing it, you can at least save the drive which is probably the hardest part to locate if not the most expensive. The cam and all weights and springs are available from Superformance. But maybe others like GT have these parts as well.
