That is the exact strategy I used. I knew from the first published pictures in R&T of the Testarossa that I had to have one. Of course I NEVER thought that would happen with the outrageous prices they were bringing then. Thankfully (? - for me at least) the purists have not yet decided that the TR is a great car and the prices were/are quite reasonable for a 12 cylinder Fcar. Couple that with a less than extravigant everyday lifestyle, parents that instilled sound financial values in their kids, and a new lady firend that said - "for God's sake go buy the thing if you can afford it. I am tired of hearing you talk about it. Enjoy it while you can still get in and out of it." About 8 weeks later I found the car I wanted and bought it outright. Haven't looked back since. Now - if only I can get her to say the same thing about that 355 Spider I am drooling over...
Things have a way of turning around if you can hang in long enough. Hope it happens soon. In the mean time how about a thread devoted to "Least Wealthy Ferrari Owner"? It might be a refreshing change.
What do you think happened to a mechanic who lost control of the car, owned by a lawyer, when he was entering the freeway, to test if the weld on the exhaust wasn't rattling? It was obvious to me that he was not testing the car, was abusing the car, to see what it would do. Simple answer: got a judgment, and made his life miserable for as long as I could. Long answer was that I sued him for an intentional tort, so he had no insurance coverage. I wanted a piece of him, and got it. Art
Never planned and never saved for my Fcar. I did always want one but never thought I could afford any. I saw the 308 while I was away on business. I checked it out got the price and bought it . All within 2 weeks and 250 miles away from home. I got it in my late 50's when I had "0" debt . My wife said go for it and there you have it.
As i kid i saw a picture on the cover of car mag... i knew right then and there. Few days later some kid on my baseball team asked if i liked 302 or 350 engines and i said "i like 308 engines". The kid looked at me funny and said "you don't do engines like that " to which i said "i do". Just remember the entire dugout kinda went silent for a second due to the way i said "i do" with such conviction. About a year later i was on vacation in Sandbridge Beach, Va and i heard the most beautiful car noises as i walked to the beach. I turned to look and saw the 308 badge on the back of the car and i haven't been the same since. That was 30 years ago when i was 9. Took me that long.
When I was about 5 or 6 I got a ride in a 308 that one of my dad's coworkers had. I have known since that day that at somepoint I will own a Ferrari. That day hasn't come yet (I'm 25 now), but hopefully it isn't too far away. However my car interest extends well beyond Ferrari, so as long as I have something cool and fast to drive, I will be happy.
What piece of him did you get if he didn't have any insurance? I've been down that road and got air. Guy filed BK and got a restraining order against me.
Intentional acts aren't dischargeable. Too bad you didn't use us for the collection. I levied on his tools, levied on his cars, levied on his bank account, levied on his house. In that order, so you can see that it wasn't an easy deal for him. Ultimately, got paid in full, and enjoyed every minute of the collection process. Next time he gets a Ferrari to repair, I suspect he won't test drive it to see how fast it is. Art
I started saving in 2005 by working extra overtime, getting a couple of bonuses, and taking side jobs (drafting, Engineering). I gathered about $45k so far, about halfway to my goal of a late 355 or early 360.......I'm hoping to pull the trigger in 2012. If you're looking for a family Ferrari on a budget, look at Mondial convertibles......less than $40k
I bought old yeller here for about $36K and change. When I was looking at it, I posted the ad link for it here on F-chat and everyone poo-poo'd it off, saying it was so cheap something must be wrong with it, etc. Jimpo was worried about the dust on the head visor if I recall correctly. Anyway, I planned to buy a Ferrari for at least 15 minutes before finally pulling the hammer. When the mechanic said "good car", I pulled the hammer! She's run like a beast ever since, and it's the cheapest car I've ever owned - hasn't depreciated a dime in 2 years! Image Unavailable, Please Login
My purchase was strictly an impulse buy. Back in my working days I started a slush fund for myself. I stashed about $500 bucks a month into it and after I retired it was worth in the neighborhook of $50 grand. I saw this pretty 308 at my brother's shop. It belonged to a car dealer who was a friend of my brother. He said that he needed $27 grand for it. I bought it for cash. I had to finance it for about a month because of a delay in my slush fund. So I still consider it to have been a cash deal. Bob Wassam
This is other the funniest post I have read.. or the most depressing ... Depends if you are joking or not I will assume you are....LMAO
For young people, #4 is the hardest to fulfill. Yet, it is perhaps the most important. I had a '65 Vette 396 which I sold when I went into military service. In Viet Nam and then, Korea, I kept a poster of an XKE over my bunk. I focused on it and put as much of my pay in the "soldier's fund" as prudence would allow. I got the XKE, kept it for two years and bought a '64 Lusso which I restored. To make a long story short I focused on what I wanted and now that I am retired I'm on my third F-car. I've had some wonderful cars along the way. I'm on my fifth house also. All are paid for. But, it took focus and patience.
Sounds like iam track! Iv'e been puttin away for the last couple years now and iam also on my way to getting my series 6 test. Once iam done paying my camaro and finish my fiero ill be shoping for my first exotic or sportscar of somekind. I have seen many people fallow that and they don't even own a Corvette It might have worked a long time ago but in this day and age alittle luck is also needed. Iam glad Iam around people who own these cars and are sending me in the wright dirrection. But I refuse to wait until iam old to finally enjoy a nice car which is why iam startin early.
Elementary school, 1988, I played a Sega arcade called 'Out Run' which featured a Testarossa Spyder in what looked like 200 pixels. Decided I shall own one of these red convertibles when I get older. I started saving then, I am still saving now. It's been 20 years and I still don't have a F car. It's kind of hard to save money when you were 12 yrs old, birthday money, Christmas money, New year money, snack money, you name it - it's in the Ferrari fund. Told my wife for the last 8 years to skip my birthday present and invest that money on the F fund. I studied hard, got a good job, make pretty decent wage. (In fact I think I studied hard many times because of that F-car poster in my bedroom. I set aside a certain amount of money every year. (yes, for 20 years) I have alittle over 200k stashed away somewhere for THE F car. Then I walked into a dealership only to find I can't afford the cheapest model. "Can I interest you in a nice Maserati here......... eh~ no thanks" With US dollars on the decline and F-cars getting more expensive every generation.... seems like I am going to be saving for awhile longer. Maybe I should look for a chopped Testarossa somewhere until the new F149 comes about.
For me it was easy. I just said to my wife, "You know how its always been hard to buy Christmas presents for me, well this year I know what I want"
F149 is supposed to be priced higher than the 430 according to the latest gossip here. Heck, just get the cut TR - those seem to hover in the $50-60k range anyway! You could get a TR and have $150,000 left over for maintenance and other things.
Saved for 25 years single-mindedly for a 308. After the house mortgage was half+ paid for, school loans paid, retirement funded, the equivilant of several vacation trips around the globe done and more planned....... I paid cash. Overpaid a bit and I do not care one whit. I do not owe ANYBODY ****!!!!! (except Verell at Unobtainium Supply.......... )
