I have my TR engine on a table and am waiting for some free time to swap out one of Newman's differential cases. I am slightly curious what I will find in there. I have experienced no differential issues in 50,000+ km on the TR, but try to tackle a major project every 5 years when the engine comes out for timing belts.

I may try to post some pictures and ask a few questions along the way (maybe in a new thread).

Is there any way to inspect the carrier without disassembling everything?
That is, what is the minimum we have to remove, to get a visual inspection done?
I think that would be handy to know for all owners.

I mean, I am happy to take off, one drive shaft, side cover, etc, whilst it’s all still on the car, to do an inspection, for piece of mind.

    ‘any volunteers?
Let’s get this out of the way for everyone, and make it a sticky..in car inspection

once paul has written that he only have seen a broken diff when he took it out.
so you see what you may do: take it out to inspect

Actually, one of the pics was with the diff still in place, before he took it out.. and you could see the cracks.
Would be good to know what was removed up to that point.

I wonder if the increased HP/Torque in the TR, plus the slightly wider tires could have been a factor?

Would be curious to know if you see any wear where the diff bearings mount onto the carrier journals. My diff carrier weld wasn't cracked, but one of the carrier journals where the diff bearings mount was worn down about .002" in diameter (showing that the carrier journal was wrongly spinning inside the diff bearing inner race) -- that made the decision for me easier ;)

Why are there 2 holes drilled near the inner section? Surely that’s not for stress relief..

My BBi Diff and transmission shaft are going to the NDI shop to be x-rayed and magnafluxed. It's an aircraft inspection facility so I think the work will be first rate. Will post the results.

    HI..

I understand so the pic must be of a later TR. My '84 BBi diff is machined on all surfaces and has no visible welds like the picture Steve posted.

This is my diff. Image Unavailable, Please Login

It is the original diff for my '90 Testarossa. That was about 21,000 miles.

Managed to split the engine from the transmission yesterday; time permitting, will have the differential out today. I recall some time ago there was a detailed thread on this with some good photos. While it does not look too difficult, might anyone have a link?

Interesting. I've owned the car for 23 years (Yikes!), knew the original owner and the subsequent owner as well. Neither indicated that there had ever been any problem, and all the paper work I have from them doesn't show any gearbox work.
When the gear box came apart it still had the original Ferrari type sealant on the surfaces. In addition it looked as though it had never been gone into.
Interesting. Given the photo of the three diffs on page 2 of this post, with the BBi diff pictured on the far left (I beleive that's correct) and the other two being TR units, that is what I made my assumption from.
In addition, I've owned the car for 23 years (yikes!), and know both prior owners. In all the previous paperwork that came with the car, there was no indication of any gearbox work being done. And when the gearbox came apart, it had factory sealant still on the sealing surfaces.
But I guess one can never really know until you are personally involved with the work being done.
