    Was wondering if there is any difference between the 83 and 84 as when looking at the eurospares website shows only for 1983 mechanical and coachwork and nothing for any other 400i years.
    Also found a site that has the manuals on a disk but then again shows 1983 and then has lube chart for a 1985.
    Anyone knows?

    The 83 and 84 manufacturing years (and the 14 400i cars produced in January and February 1985) are essentially identical and referred to as "series 2" 400i. The series 2 cars started production sometime in late 1982 (I have the serial number of the changeover from series 1 to series 2 on my main computer) and the series 2 cars are distinguished mainly by these features:

    1. Ventilation outlets on front of dash instead of circular vents on top of dash;

    2. Leather covered center console instead of a wood insert;

    3. Solenoid operated switches for the hood, gas cap and trunk releases;

    4. Slight bump up in horsepower from 310 to 315 hp;

    5. Body color rear fascia/valance instead of the flat black of the series 1;

    6. Revised seating cushion configuration with a different pattern and all one color instead of contrasting color inserts on (some? all?) of the series 1 cars..

    I'm sure that there are some other minor changes that I can't recall right now but those are the major and most visible differences.

    What is your approximate location (i.e., your emission/non-market vehicle situation)? One thing you might check are the OMs (available, at All Ferraris) -- they have the 287/83 pamphlet describing the 400i CH version changes (and the changes seem very minor to me -- more like just BSing the CH emission people with some printed, and therefore, "official", lower CO/HC spec numbers that seem unlikely to be achieved in real world operation IMO). The euro and CH versions use the same (stock) injection and ignition systems, but many 400i ignition systems seem to get replaced with something else, and some locations require changes to the injection system so many are modified/remodified in that area too -- so individual cars can have large differences that weren't present when delivered new.

    Hi Steve,
    I am in the GTA, Toronto area. The car is a CA car and will be up here hopefully by mid March.
    I am a licensed retired technician so I can perform all the work even without the manuals, but the manuals would probably shorten my time....... LOL

    The other key difference between the series 1 and series 2 400i cars is that the series 2 cars have the hydraulic self leveling rear suspension as opposed to the (I think) multiple shock leveling system. The workshop manual says that serial number 42705 was the first 400i with the hydraulic self leveling suspension system.

    They should have been black to begin with, but the answer is "yes"
