I know this might be a dumb question, but can anyone give me a brief explanation of the similarities/differences between all the different racing formats, e.g. F1, GT, LeMans, Indy, CART, et. al.? Many of them seem very similar, and I know I haven't listed all the formats here.

    Thank,

    Joe G

i figure you'll not get any reply so here is quick answer. motor racing has many different classes, off road, on road or might side roads. anyway they all have four tires and other than this things are mostly different. you should check into auto racing next time before you ask questions like this.

I don't know a whole lot of the specifics, but here's what I know:

F1: The edge of modern technology. N/A V10's (2.4L V8's next year), revving to close to 20,000 rpms. Close to 1000hp

LeMans (aka ALMS, etc.) Open cockpit high technology cars. Think less advanced F1 cars with fenders. IIRC they use N/A V8's, but I think they have several different engines. Probably around 800hp or so.

CART: Much less advanced, but still wicked quick. Supercharged V8's making around 700hp. I think these are 1 or 2 slots down from F1 cars, but still up there. People give this series some crap, but they actually put on a decent show at the right track. They also have a "push to pass" thing, which IIRC is basically a shot of extra gas to give you and extra "boost". You only have 1:00 to use during the race though, so you have to use it right. They also have the Bridgestone "Reds", which is basically a "higher performance" tire above the normal "blacks". You are only allowed 1 set per race though, so you must also use this at the right time. CART has some pretty cool stuff like this that really changes things up strategy wise. If only they had some better tracks to run on, it would be an awesome show. Most of their races are street/road circuits, with few ovals.

IRL: VERY similar to CART, but they use N/A V8's, making slightly less hp. They race many more ovals, with a couple street/road circuits. They have some better races, but all the bickering between IRL/CART kinda keeps both series from doing good.

GT: Which series are you talkign about? The SpeedGT series? (Vipers, Corvettes, etc.?) These are MUCH more like their "stock" counterparts. They make probably around 500hp. These are possibly the most fun to watch, as the drivers do much more. (Much less aero dependency, computer controls, etc. a la F1).

Not sure how that is, if I missed anything/got anything wrong please correct me.
