Hey guys, Just thought I'd try to get some more info out there understanding the likelihood of differential failure. To all of the fellows that have had to go through it what was your mileage? Mine went at 42k.
Any kind of warning? How many miles did you use the car before it happened? I think the main risk of a differential problem is cars that been abused by former owners. So I am wondering if it happened at the beginning of an ownership or after years of using the car. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The only warning I got was heavy vibration in the lower revs, then the quintessential gearbox oil shooting out of the back.
Enough warning to stop the car and avoid further damage or the damage was already done? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes but OPs went at 42k miles that mileage would make you think you have “made it” If a car has been abused by former owners I would think the differential would go at a lower mileage. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I thought there was a big 'ol thread on this that seemed to say that a mileage correlation wasn't possible because of the manual-nature of the weld, as well as the manual nature of how the weld was filed down / cleaned up after it was originally put together?
There was. And IIRC someone put together a graphical presentation of the data collected. We've down this road before....
Here it is https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/testarossa-dreaded-differential-issues-and-questions.523391/ The stats start on Page 6. Based on sales of aftermarket diffs, failure occurred at an average of 40k miles for those that either failed OR replaced as preventative maintenance so Brad, you hit the bullseye
mine was broken at a little more than 22000 km, but had much more broken inside. some teeth have escaped from the CP, but can not say what was first broken: the diff or the CP set
I have a bran new Newman Dif in the trunk of my TR hahahah. Life financial grenades kept it form being installed with a major. (Home AC Heat, Vet bills etc). Priorities I guess.
Sorry for the redundancy boys. Lear60, of course you do! I should have done the same. Luckily newman was able to get one out to me pretty quickly, a very big help!
hello JohnnyGQ please read this: https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/what-do-you-think-about-filling-out-the-profile-and-introducing.567692/ may help you to get more answers I think
There is nothing wrong with original internals. The problem is the welded diff. case. Modena engineering makes a complete diff. with new internals. But many believe all new internals is not necessary.
until now I changed 3 diffs with those from MODENA ENGINEERING, australia, and never had problems with those. they are complete to put in
Hi friends, Happened to stumble over this new thread of friend Brad .... Why not do a poper search here and find all info that already is available here ? Must now- 3 years after stopped renewing that info- have many more breakdowns of diff for sure. It's NOT a matter of IF but a matter of WHEN it will happen to your diffs imo .... We need a "my diff. is still original" option to get a better gauge of how unlikely a failed differential is. My Ferrari mechanic how services the majority of TRs and 308s has yet to see a diff. failure.
good idea - then you may create this thread please I can not do this because my original diff has been broken already
I hope you let him read all we wrote in that thread ... it is NOT unrealistic, you may/will notice this yourself once, very sudden ...
Non withstanding a very awful experience of a differential failure some of you may have had, I believe that the internet has a way of amplifying an issue which is not as prevalent as it may seem.
I agree on both accounts. Diff failure are not a legend. Speaking with my mechanic about this, they are not many huge signs telling u it is going to die. However, and i will trust roberto Roselli my mechanic on that, it seems also that the diff failure can be caused by poor driving habits and generally poor maintenance. As he once told me; u would be surprised how people abuse their cars. I personally was always gentle with my car, waiting for warm up, never dropped the clutch and i was pleasantly surprised with its reliability: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
