Sport, Super, and Ultimate Series? Really? I hate what they are doing with this. I find it completely unnecessary, and a tad confusing.

Also, not a fan of their model designations. Absolutely terrible.

    Comments?

OK smart guy. Dan's been here 14 years. You've not. Quit ****ting on threads. Go enjoy whatever you own, and fill out your profile.

McLaren, the mid-(rear)engine sport cars factory. They are trying to revitalize and swirl up this market segment with different levels of performance, designs and relatively short product cycles. If you are looking for such a car surely a good address. The model designation is actually easy to understand, a reference to performance/power and purpose. I think they make the best of their current options. Time will tell if this will be enough.

They’re too logical and data driven to not divide their model range into specific categories like organizing a spreadsheet.

I said it was a "tad" confusing. Do you understand what "tad" means? You obviously don't because you went on to ask if it was really that confusing to me, as if this was something that I spent more than a minute of my life thinking about.

IPO1 posted a rude response to a couple long time members here and in other threads.
Kizdan and I have been here since 2003.
Neither IPO1 nor you have jack in your profiles. Fill them out until established. Then edit after people know you.
Pretty big cojones to be rude to 14 year (more since previous board) vets.
This is a great board, people that act like trolls get tossed.
I'm not "bossman". But every mod and Rob Lay know me, and Dan. So, get some cred, or someone will send you bye-bye.
So yes, a simple question was treated as idiotic by a couple anonymous noobs. Try that on Rennsport or 4chan little one, see how it goes. :Do_O

No one is trolling. You don't like answers sometimes--that is not trolling. It's called an OPINION.

OP asked for 'comments'. I gave my comment--you don't like it?. This is how forums work. People reply. You don't get to control people. You really are high strung and combative in most of your replies. Try decaf.

I didn't know there is a protocol to answering questions based upon how long someone has been here. Give me a break.

Go enjoy your 720. Love that car.

Sfumato! Chill please, you sound like a vet who’s seen the most awful atrocities in war and are living life on a hair trigger. Please relax my friend, I’m certain that nobody wishes you any harm of any kind. I’m not sure why my profile is so important to you. Yes, Jack is not in my profile, sorry, but who is Jack? Profile-wise, I’ve been on the registrars (maybe even still) of the FBI, CIA, MI5, KGB and Mossad and I’m still alive. If you’re curious, just Google me. Why are you talking about my testes??? Am I correct in assuming that your use of the word “cojones’” is the slang word for male gonads? Mine, by the way are not overly big, they’re only about 27 mm in diameter (slightly over an inch). Yes, I agree, this is a great board to bounce our diverse opinions around, but I once knew a kid in 4th grade that once said something similar to this to me (But every mod and Rob Lay know me, and Dan. So, get some cred, or someone will send you bye-bye). He was inferring to me that he would have the school principle (his daddy) expell me if I didn’t give him my lunch. I was SO shaken up! He ended up weighing almost 100 kilos at the end of the year on a 4 foot tall frame, very sad, psychologically unstable and ill-equipped to handle the pressures of student life. Who are you referring to above in your message as “little one” may I ask?

    Spare me.

You are a typical newbie know-it-all, trying to be as anonymous as possible, so you can see how far you can push people. I look at your initial response to me, and it is a sarcastic attempt by you to belittle my view, to try and make it sound like I am stupid, and you are some higher level thinker. That is precisely what you are doing. I've seen your type, over and over again. In fact, I was your type when I 1st joined here. Then I learned. I am still learning, from those who have been in this community longer than me.

When people refer to how long others have been here, it is because it is an established community, where the longer you have been here, the more comfortable we are with each other, the more we feel like we know each other. We can kid around with each other only because of how long we have known each other.

Then a newbie smart ass like you comes along (you aren't the first, nor will you be the last), and needs to be put in his place by people like Sfumato, and now, myself. If you stick around long enough, you may actually gain an appreciation of being part of this community.

Excuse my ignorance Dan, it’s just that I’m a newbie here too. For my own clarification (and I would imagine for other newbies too), is it okay to use words on this forum like in your message above when insulting and threatening other members on this forum? I specifically refer to your use of the word “smart as-“. In other forums that I am a member of, there is a zero tolerance for the use of discriminatory, insulting and profane language. It is intended to maintain a moral and civilised level of conduct and communication within the forum members and any, ANY, member using such derogatory words would be immediately suspended or dismissed permanently from the forums. Perhaps this forum tolerates such language? Is there a list of profane words available that are not considered profane or that we can use as we amass years of membership on this forum? At which point do we achieve the necessary status to use words like “smart as-“ within our posts? Just being curious my friend. I would never want to use that word in a post to you and risk being penalised. Do you understand me and where I’m coming from? Cheers!

Insulting and threatening other members? That is quite a stretch.

Is this an attempt to get a moderator's attention, with your so formally written assessment of my post? There's a much easier way.........just click on the button on the bottom left of my post to report it, if it is so offensive.

If you type in a word that is inappropriate, it will not show up in a post. Like if I tell you to go and **** yourself, this is how **** is displayed. Then again, why don't you just read the rules yourself? You seem to be into that kind of thing, as you appear to know everything about the rules in other forums you go on. Why is this an exception, or do you get senior members on these other forums to hold your hand and review rules too?

Why doesn't everyone just take the night off from this thread?

If I get any more reports on this freakin' piddly thread, I'll just give EVERYONE WHO IS MISBEHAVING A THREAD BAN.

    "What's that?" you say.

Simply a ban that blocks you from posting in a specific thread, easy peasy, you're no longer involved in the thread in which you are making dumb ass comments.

And as moderators, we don't show any favoritism. If you're dopey, expect to pay for your dopey-ness, young or old, noob or veteran.

Ok, now if you can't post in here with some decorum, back away from the keyboard.

Back to your original post then Dan, let’s bring this tension level down a few notches and be grown-ups about it.

You’re asking for comments? Sure, here are my 2 dinars worth on McLaren’s series and model designations.

I think they’ve absolutely nailed it. I would opine that there is absolutely NOTHING confusing about it. Look at it this way:

    Great, Greater, Greatest.

That is how most companies traditionally seperate their ranges, it’s nothing new. You do get that reasoning, right? But why do you say you are a tad confused?

Also, addressing the fact that you say you are not a fan of their model designations...would you be a fan of it being less or more complicated?

For instance, and as a starting point, the numerical values they use (570, 650, 675, 688 and 720) refer to their vehicle’s PS value. PS stands Pferdestärke, literally horse strength in the German language. It’s a metric measurement of horsepower and one PS is the equivalent of 0.986 horsepower. That means that 570 designates 570PS. I can’t simplify the explanation any more than that so I hope it’s fairly clear and unconfusing now. That is, in my view, the simplest way to designate a model. If you prefer a simpler designation, I can only imagine them calling their model ranges the 1, 2 and 3 models. Or perhaps the A, B and C models.

Perhaps the number and letter combination is the confusing part you refer to? They add an S to the number to imply the Sport model (S = Sport), or GT (GT = Gran Touring) or LT (LT = Lots of Testosterone).

Perhaps you would enjoy their model designations much more if they were descriptive names? For example, as Ferrari does with the Enzo, they could instead name their new P1 successor the McLaren Ron. Or the McLaren TheMcLaren. Do you see those as absolutely terrible or absolutely genius designations Dan?

Additionally, and for the lower ranges, they could use local town names, just like Ferrari does with the Modena, Maranello and Fiorano. How would you feel about driving a McLaren Woking or even a McLaren Weybridge or a McLaren Chertsey?

In summary, those are my suggestive, and hopefully informative, comments to your post.

Would you be so kind as to also dump some of your ideas and thoughts here on how you, as a theoretical branding specialist, would direct a successful series and model designation naming assignment? Many people are not creative in this sense but I feel you are because you are obviously very observant to detail and creative people are always great critics. Suggestions? Comments?

Well, looks like we're batting .500.

Valentino, you're out of this thread until New Years.

Snide comments are not better than all out hostility.

If you drag this into other threads, then I'll extend it to a site wide ban.

Yes, I understand how they came to the designations - I just don't find them to be particularly memorable or intriguing. In 5 years from now, nobody will remember the difference between a 650 S coupe and a 675 LT, never mind what Series it is part of. I am not saying everyone needs to be like Ferrari, but I certainly find their model designations to be much more memorable and intriguing. You want a hotter 458? Here is the Speciale. No one will ever need further explanation on the model name - it's clear and unique. No one will ever mistaken a 599 for an F12. Can you imagine an F12S? Or an F12GT? Let's throw some more designations in there. Oh, and don't forget what series it falls under too.....

I actually find the Mac destinations much easier -- my opinion.

    What the heck are these?
    GTC4Lusso, GTC4LussoT
    California, California T
    FF
Ferrari 488 (even though 600+ HP)
    LaFerrari

    And the list goes on.

Mac I think is ingenious to put their cars in three categories and the model designation (650, 720, 570, etc is a good clue of HP). At the end of the day no one is saying 'hey is that a super sports or an 'ultimate'. But it is a good upsell marketing ploy.

Oh well, either way I guess it doesn't bother me.

    Happy New Years.
