Yesterday was a memortable Midwest fall day. Beautiful skies, nice relatively warm temps., just a good time to be outside. As I wrote in another post yesteday, the kind of day one wants to be out playing with his toys. Thanks to Jim Selevin and rsnodgrass for their posts, I was off to a parts store. I did the entire drivetrain in my '74 within the last couple of years so the car has never run so well, at least in the 21 years that I have enjoyed her. This being the case, I thought I'd enjoy the journey for parts. Not far from my casa I entered an intersection. No problems, the light was green for me. Until I got into the intersection. You know how things become a blurr in an instant? Well, the light turned yellow and I saw a car coming into the interseftion past another stopped car. She was aimed right at me and not slowing down to stop, oblivious to me, the red light, the stopped car next to her and yaking on her damn cellphone. I was not quite thru the intersection when I turned hard to port to steer away from her. Right at a curb. Did a quick right to avoid the curb and just braced for the impact and sound of crushing metal. Nothing but screaching brakes and rubber! I was straightened out and was properly headed in my correct lane. Turning toward her, I reached out the top and "waved" bye-bye at her as I yelled at the top of my lungs (have a good day?? Naw.). Never did make it to the parts store. After that, a drive in the country seemed good. Away from other drivers. So, what's the moral of the story? There must be a bunch of them. Don't trust anyone? Cellphones and driving don't mix? Woman drivers, no survivors? At least my bubbaleh and me had a nice drive. Marc

Sounds like the Dino's handling prowess proved itself impressively.

Remember to pick up some seat leather cleaner.

Dino handling and driving skill both tested in an instant - PASSED! One really has to drive defensively more than ever. And if it isn't a mobile phone, it's somebody messing with their iPod.

And here's the best part. Had there been an impact, she would have denied there was ever a red light for her and that it was you who ran the red light. Then your loss would be denied by her insurance carrier until an independant and unbiased witness were provided to support either parties' synopsis.

I deal with this every day. People (especially soccer Mom's) are horrible liars.

isn't there a log of light changes? correlating that with the cell phone log, might prove in court.

Nope. There is no light change log. Traffic signals either operate on a timer which changes signals based on time of day and the traffic in question, or on a plate system. A plate system is basically just a sensor that tells when a vehicle is waiting for an intersection signal to change when it is driven over or sitting on top of. It is a requirement by law on most states that the traffic signals have a delay built in before a light turns green for one direction of traffic due to the amount of people who run red lights. In other words, the light turns red in one direction, and then 3 or 4 seconds later the other direction turns green. That design is not by accident. Pun intended.
