Hi all. Hope you can help with this one. My 246 Dino has developed what I think is a clutch problem. If the clutch is fully depressed, it seems to cause loading of the starter motor which makes starting quite difficult(car starts normally with clutch let out). Once started with first gear engaged, the clutch seems to bite early when let out from fully depressed position, causing a sudden increase in load on the engine with subsequent rough action/hopping of car and need for more revs. No slipping is felt and once moving, there is no problem in changing gears and clutch action feels smooth,ie clutch action only seems a problem when taking off from complete stop. Clutch cover was taken off and nothing seems amiss, eg plate, bearing looks ok. Mechanic (very experienced) is puzzled. Could it be a problem with the pressure plate? Anyone else encountered anything similar?

    Thanks

    Greg

I read it all, but don't know what to say. You've kind of answered your own questions, and you have an experienced guy helping you. If you cant see it, and he cant see it, it aint there!!??

Where are you anyway. If in Melbourne, drop the parts by to me and I'll see if I can find anything out the ordinary...

I have a rebuild service for clutches, which includes rebuilding and re-springing (and/or uprating) the pressure plate... which if course necessitates dismantling the pressure plate. Maybe there's something going on inside.

    Just guessing though.

Thanks guys. Sorry about the pressure(!) but this is really peeing me off. Phil, unfortunately(or fortunately) I'm in Sydney and can't swing past your workshop. We are going to try putting a fresh pressure plate in and see whether it fixes the problem. I'm just dreading the thought of having to dell deeper and start stripping major components.......

It's strange that depressing the clutch would load the starter motor and make it hard to start. You might want to check the endplay on the crankshaft to see if the crank thrust bearings are unusually worn.
