I recently learned my 72 dino is using "emergency mode" for starting. I believe this means the dinoplex unit is not working or was removed?. Looking at the owner's manual, if the car originally came with an emergency mode, it must mean the dinoplex was not very reliable. On emergency mode, is it safe/reliable? How can I tell what is on the car? Sal M
Most Dino owners don't use the dinoplex. I am fine running the Marelli coil without dinoplex. Can anyone explain what the dinoplex do exactly? How does it help prevent spark plug fouling?
I don't think it's true that "most owners" don't use the dinoplex. I think most do use it, or a new replacement unit like the MSD 6A which is the same style of capacitative (?) discharge unit like the dinoplex. It helps avoid spark plug fouling at low speeds around town by assuring that there is always a strong spark at the plug. It also allows the points to last longer since they aren't seeing full current but are just acting as a trigger. Having said that, when my dinoplex died, I flipped over to "emergencia" position and didn't notice any loss of performance. Nor did I notice any big improvement when I installed the MSD as a replacement 3 months later.
what the heck is emergency mode, don't recall seeing that in the manual... let me know, since I may need to use it someday. #4948
Dino's have dual ignition systems, a standard coil system, and the Dinoplex system. Then when (not if) the Dinoplex fails, you switch to the backup (emergency) system. It's a little switch on top of the dinoplex unit. Ignition switch must be in the off position before switching to the emergency ignition system. Lots of folks are running happily on the backup system. I believe it may not provide as hot a spark, allthough I may be completely full of crap on that. I just seem to recall hearing that somewhere. And that it tends to use up the point faster. DM
