so far ... 418k - for the red 1969 206 GT 462k - 1972 - 246 GT - hazelnut metallic (gold-ish) restored to high level 341k - 1974 - 246 GTS - dino blu - (John G's resto) that price means it was hammered at 310K 484K - 1974 GTS - yellow over tan - (chairs and flairs) hammers at 440K I assume all buyer's premiums are 10% and I have to consider the final number - including the premium included in any current market value As a bidder (a rare one at that) I am always a seller at auctions - but as a bidder you have to be calculating the premium into your bidding strategy Not to mention the fact that you pay state tax on the spot (for the most part - unless you have a wholesale license) so no under reporting on the sale price So it would;d seem that there are 2 more Dinos to run here but do folks here have an opinion on the current market?
the anomaly to me is of course John Gunderson's car - hammering at 310K seems light on that car but I have stood in enough auction rooms to know that any one of a million factors can knock a price sideways The car that ran before him etc.
RM commission scale is 12% on the first $250,000, 10% thereafter. The most valuable car (206) brought wholesale money or less. It is difficult to draw any firm conclusions from these sales.
It seems all over the place to me. Why does the hazelnut resto sell for 120k more than John’s resto ? That doesn’t make sense to me. The 206 at 200k less than estimate ? I don’t know anything about any of these cars. Maybe the bidders know things I don’t.
The 206 and 246 C&F cars were nice restoration candidates. The 206 was still well bought. That said, they were never getting close to their estimates. The Gooding 246 GT was the best of the bunch and sold accordingly. Eddie Karam’s CF car at Bonhams was a great original example.
As the seller of the Gooding car I have a few comments. The car was restored to be completely original in every way. It was completely disassembled to the space frame and every component was restored to the highest level. As an example, the wiring harness was removed from the car intact and was sent to Rhode Island wiring to be duplicated. The original wire colors with radial stripes were not available so we had the wire custom made. Could go on... The car won a platinum award at Cavallino and it scored 98.5. It lost a 1/2 point for over restoration and the other items were corrected. My opinion is that you must follow the “fully original” path to have an investment grade Dino.
Apparently it was sold by Gooding at Amelia Island in 2014 for 638k. I heard that there was some concern with the engine (no engine number in the catalogue). I wonder if whatever problem there might be with the engine only got uncovered after the sale in 2014.
Folks any word on this one? https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/AZ18/Arizona/lots/r119-1972-ferrari-dino-246-gt-chairs-flares-by-scaglietti/544481
