This thread isn't on the brand but the fit - I'm somewhat confused about what battery to put in my L-series Dino, the old one in both my cars were not in any way the correct size...

I found photos and comments of group 9, 24, 34, 34R batteries being used:

I took some measurements and the tray will take up to 263L x 175W x 215H. Height here is to the top deck of the battery not incl. terminal.
Since the battery manufacturer measurements are nominal, I went and measured them in store and the group 24, group 34 or 34R (with the optional 1" tray underneath) look to be correct for Diehard or Optima brands. (Can't find a group 9).

Looking in any modern battery catalog is hopeless for finding anything on the Dino however I found Sears list every model Ferrari and up until 10-15 years ago they list the group 34R as being the correct type.
This means the +ve terminal is on the front LHS of the battery and -ve terminal on the front RHS as it sits in the car.

The manual says the original battery is a FIAMM tipo 6 MC 4/R, I can't find a cross reference however the drawings in all 206/246L/246E manuals and parts manual show the terminals are at the rear as it sits in the car.
This would indicate a group 24 as being correct but if you want an AGM type battery, you have to go for a group 34.

A bunch of folks have been installing group 34R or 24F which have the polarity of the terminals reversed from the photos in the manuals (towards the front of the car as were both my old batteries). Having the terminals towards the rear would give more clearance to the battery cover.
I'm wondering if there's a reason for using a 34R/24F or a cross-referencing mistake, or maybe the manual is wrong and all the original batteries had terminals at the front???

    Thanks, Andrew

PS. I'm probably going to take the Diehard AGM 34R back and get a group 34 instead. They have a fairly plain flat black top if you remove all the decals which I think looks more appropriate than an optima.

Also note in the pics fromthe manuals that the E-series has rubber bands for removing the battery whereas the 206/L-series doesn't.

Thanks Dave, I did look at those from a prior thread but the top and caps are quite different from the ones in the manual... maybe more suitable for 50's-60's? ... and it's 2x price the AGM type!
If you click on the link to Rob and Pauls website, they found or made something very close.

I'm not trying to replicate the battery, I'd be happy just having the correct group and terminal locations and then I'll choose a modern AGM battery that doesn't look too obnoxious (which I think is a group 34).
Ya, and maybe I'll slap a FIAMM sticker on it :)

I have used Group 24 batteries in my car for the last 29 years and they have fit and performed well. Nothing special-- just the longest guarantee Walmart or Napa or whatever has.

The important thing is to keep a battery maintainer on it and it will last the better part of a decade.

24 and 24 F only differ in terminal placement, so just pick the one that attaches most easily to your cables.

Your car is not a girlfriend who will love you more if you get it an expensive battery. 😊

Thanks for the comments on the size Jim.
On the battery chemistry, I moved over to AGM a 2 years ago on my 512 and I've had no issues. The latest consumer reports rate them highly and you can buy them now for about $160. I'm not really qualified to debate the merits of various battery brands but I definitely feel the love at a reasonable price... :)
