What size door speakers do you have in your dino? The original hole in the door seems to fit a 4" speaker only. I have seen dino pictures from Ferrari chat that showed doors with much larger speaker grills ( 5.25" or 6.5"). did anyone cut to fit 5.25" or 6.50" speakers? ( not that I would cut into my doors) I have a euro spec 1971 dino. Were the speaker holes smaller for euro spec cars vs. the US models?
The guy who owned my Dino before me butchered the doors and hung larger speakers in them. Truth? You're not gonna get great sound no matter what you do and why butcher the doors. Buy the best 4" you can find and be happy. DM
I did run 3 way speakers of at least 6" in my '73 UK car, but that was when speakers were not as deep as they are now. It involved cutting out the door panel opening, which I would not do today. I believe the quality of a modern 4" would be a vast improvement on of things of old, still, as dm_n_stuff said, you will not get great sound anyway! I supposed one could try component fronts and and under dash amp and subwoofer. But in reality, you would only enjoy it with the engine off, or at very high volume at crusing speed. The Dino does not have the acoustics of the Albert Hall and in any case it comes with its own orchestra.
For me, a radio in a Dino is a redundancy. The car comes equipped with its own sound system, just behind the seats! Fred
I agree with you that the engine sound is better than any radio will ever be. However, I have broken speaker grilles and speakers in my doors that need to be replaced. I don't want to do any cutting and the speaker holes already exists in my door panels. If the car never had a radio, that would have been fine by me.
i don't have in door grills, can you post a pic of what you have or what is the considered the appropriate grill in Dinos?
Redoing the door panels should not be a major project. This might be an option for you. w/ smiles Jimmy
Michael, you may want to take a look at this thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=278750&highlight=Door+panels There you can find several photos of door panels, both with and without speaker perforations. Lars
They appear to be punched in the same pattern as my 330 rear shelf (all of which came punched, radio or no, M
Been there, done that... When I purchased my Dino I installed a refurbished Becker Mexico with tape deck, three way speakers in the doors, a good amp under the passenger seat, and an Ipod connection. Three years later I had it all removed. The sound was pure crap. The small passenger compartment, the lack of soundproofing (thank god!), the flimsy door panels, and the glorious and loud engine noise made listening to any music a hopeless entreprise. I could only conceive a sound system in a Dino for listening to the news in a traffic jam, and that's not the way I use it. I fully agree with those who recommend just listening to the six-cylinder soundtrack. In my opinion, sound systems and Dinos don't go well together. Cheers, Julio P.S: Anybody interested in a perfect 1972 Becker Mexico with tape deck?
Couldn't help but giggle when I read your line "the sound was pure crap". I am in shock to find out that you were indeed a high tech guy doing all that, Julio ,...ipod ????? Seriously, some people do load the car up with goodies. There is this Dino here in Japan that I saw couple years back, loaded with just about everything you can think of. The owner was proud of it. Suppose we all have different strocks. w/ smiles Jimmy
Hi Jimmy! Nobody's perfect... I had always particularly enjoyed listening to music while driving, and I figured I could do the same in the Dino... That was so stupid, for many reasons... I also giggle when I think about it! Cheers, Julio
Thanx, Julio,...it makes me feel a bit relaxed to know that there was still a bit of imperfection left in you ! Enjoying your comments immensely. Thanx again, Julio. w/ smiles Jimmy
When driving, it seems almost impolite to put the sound on, like interrupting a conversation. Having said that, there a times when sounds are appropriate. For those times I will get rid of the three way speakers and install component 5" in the doors and surface mount the tweeters in the kicker panels next to the air vents. On a RHD drive car I have the option of mounting a powered sub somewhere under the dash in the passenger compartment ( have not done it yet but I think it will work). Wont bother with a period correct radio, cause the set up aint period. A media player with a built in graphic equalizer will do. Then when I do want to listen to some sounds it will be like wearing head phones.
