Datsun also made these for the 240Z (71-73). I don't think they, the Dino's covers, were available directly from the factory (from any of the manufacturers at that time) as fore some reason they weren't DOT approved. Also the same reason the Daytona’s had pop up headlamps state side while the Euro version had them behind the plexi covers. The Datsun covers were available at the parts department through the NISMO motorsports catalog. I'd always assumed that the ones for the Dino were also available in the same way from the Ferrari parts department. You couldn't order them on the car but you could order the parts and fit them later yourself.

    Anyone?

Right, for US markets....it was a legal issue..

IN the middle of the P3/4 resto thread they make new ones for it...and if you search here you can see others have mounted them.

Most of the Dino ones are rimless, IIRC, but agree the trim adds strength probably and is nice looking.........

Disclaimer, not a Dino specialist or anything.......

DOT had lots of issues with Euro style lights in the early 70's.

Not only couldn't you cover them, but they had to be sealed beams, too.

Hence the Wagner or Westinghouse sealed lamps in US cars, and the Carellos halogens in Euro cars.

I do like those plexi covers with the trim pieces. I've never seen them in person, although I have seen that picture before somewhere...

I am wondering whether they are still available thru the catalogue you mention NISMO MOTORSPORT ?. Is that still current ?

They do look pretty cool don't they and they seem to somehow finish the car off and make it look like the faired in headlights were always meant to be.

Similar to this. I was never all that crazy about the little L-bracket attachment method, but I think I would get a set of these in a heartbeat if I had the chance. The surrounds give a much more finished appearance.

I bought a set back in '97 from Maranello Concessionaires but they were not the original type and the lines weren't right (too steeply raked). About a year or two later, Dennis McCann was selling the properly curved type. I bought a paid and had the body/paint show shave them at the edges to get a great fit. Given that the car was down to bare metal, it was the right time to do the work. I have never mounted them on the car because of the judging implications for US events but one day, I'm going to put them on because in my opinion, they look really nice on Dinos (even without the chrome surrounds).

    My $0.02.
