Can anyone identify for me the black square box in the bottom left of the picture with FIAMM on it? Is it a relay? My alternator has stopped charging and the current is making it to the regulator , comes out of the regulator to this component and then stops. Or is this box nothing to do with the charging process? Thanks.

The black square box with the FIAMM label is the original (mechanical) voltage regulator. The interesting part is next to it, a Hueco 13 0723 electronic voltage regulator. If its broken then your alternator would indeed stop charging. D- is connected to ground, D+ should receive 12-14 Volts supply voltage, DF is connected to the Alternators field windings input to control the output voltage.

Adrian, I know I am on very thin ice with electrical issues and your vast knowledge about them, but, isn't the FIAMM black box a relay for the horns?
    Regards, Alberto

Alberto, you' right, it is indeed the relay for the horns. The original mechanical regulator was in the place the Hueco regulator is mounted now. Thanks for spotting this!

Horn relay, thanks. So nothing to do with charging then. I need to chech the current to and from the regulator again. Yes the original regulator was changed for the supposedly more reliable solid state type but this component is only about 18mths old itself.

Go to the engine bay and check the voltage at the fuse box which is aattached to the firewall.

Checck fuses and also voltage readings from there. Large red wire should be 13.25v, white wire voltage varies with engine speed and battery charge
