Tah, Tah! I've been working with Stuart at Keys4Classics.com for a few months to find key blanks and codes for the above title subject. At the FCA Annual Meet in June, we had a break-through coincidence: I'm in line at the concours to receive my Platino Award and in front of me is David Friar in his beautiful silver flares & chairs Dino. We're chatting and I note the "teeny-weeny" key hanging in his security bar. I tell him I've been looking for one for my car for years, "Do you mind if I try yours?" He hands me the key; I try it; it works fine; I tell him about my search with Stuart, David says keep the key until you find what you need. Thank you David! First time I've ever met the guy . . . are Dino owners neat, or what!

So, I send macro-photos to Stuart and 6 weeks later he sends me 2 cut keys to try and several blanks. One of the cut keys is perfect and I have a local locksmith cut a spare. The blank is Silca V1088 (an Italian mfgr.) and my code is 031. Stuart doesn't know what other codes there are but I suspect not many.

You can contact Stuart at [email protected] . . . try code 031 first unless you have really good photos of a key that fits your car. They have a website, www.keys4classics.com, but this key is not yet listed.

    Good luck,

    Bill

    Prices are:

    Decoding key from a photo = US$7

KEYS CUT TO THE SAME CODE-
(note - increasing discount for multiple keys)
    1 key = $11.50 + shipping 2.95 = US$14.45
    2 keys = $16.95 + shipping 2.95 = US$20.90
    3 keys = $21.90 + shipping 2.95 = US$24.85
    4 keys = $25.95 + shipping 2.95 = US$28.90
    5 keys = $29.90 + shipping 2.95 = US$32.85

Uncut key blanks = US$3.50 each

    wspeer,

I started my search for the elusive V.V key blank many moons ago based on this same photo which may have been posted by you. That same thread put me on to Keys4Classics as a possible source. Stuart at Keys4Classics couldn't find the V.V blank and dropped the search until I could find photos of an original, on both sides, that he could use to cut a suitable blank . . . assuming he could find an appropriate V.V substitute.

I did find an original (thanks to Dave Friar). I did take the photos. He did find an excellent Italian blank. Thus, the reason for this thread. We now have a source for all Dinos to use, if what you say is true about one-fits-all. Maybe other models can use the same.

Btw, for those who worry about "must have OEM/NOS" parts to meet FCA concours standard, not true. If you doubt that, talk to Rick Race, FCA President and fellow Dino owner for many years, or Chris Current, FCA Chief Judge. E-mail me at [email protected] and I'll give you their phone numbers, if needed.

Do you have a key code on that imposter key? Any identifying marks?
This might be agood place to start if you can't find the V.V. key

While I had good results from Stuart cutting keys which I had the key code and cutting code for, caution should be stated when using Stuart to decipher keys from images. Although he claims that he can do this on his website, I had two attempts which failed and then he became non-responsive.

I showed one of Stuart's keys to my local locksmith and he stated that Stuart is using solid steel keys, not keys with brass interiors. Sure enough, no gold color inside the cut area.
This will wear down your lock cylinders faster and replacing cylinders will probably be expensive and time consuming.

they key works on all of my dino's and the other dino's i have seen have the same key cut pattern. master locks has a lock key that is the right size and shape.

correct me if i am wrong, but i could never imagine a nice car losing points in being judged for having the wrong key. am i wrong?

    Synchro,
As stated in my first post to this thread, the code is 031. The key blank is Silca V1088. Stuart got it right on the first try from my photos. The Silca keys are definitely not steel (they are not attracted to a magnet). Even if they were, it's not like I'm going to use the key more than a few times a year . . . at most! And I've never seen a concours judge check a key to see that it works, nor the jack, nor the alternator/water pump belt that's in the tool kit, etc. Hopefully we won't get that anal! :)

Overall, I was very satisfied with the service at Keys4Classics and I hope this thread is beneficial to other Ferrari owners.

The magnet test does not work on all types of steel. For example, I have a Traulsen stainless steel commercial refrigerator/freezer in my home kitchen (with a deli style glass door on the refrigerator side) and magnets won't stick to it. Yet, magnets will stick to my Lacanche range and the stainless steel venthood.

Austenitic grades of stainless steel have very low magnetic properties. The actual magnetic properties depend upon the chromium and nickel ratios/content in the steel.

Good points about the various alloys of steel not being magnetic. So when Synchro's locksmith warned him to beware of "solid steel" (which sounds like it should be magnetic) he actually may have meant beware of all the various alloys of steel like those in your kitchen appliances. Could some of those alloys be non-magnetic AND soft enough to be used safely as a key a few times a year? I wonder if a brass key this small is strong enough to endure frequent use. Maybe not. Maybe that's a good reason to use a mild (non-magnetic) alloy of steel for this application. Whatever! The Silca blank seems to be a good sub until someone comes up with a supply of NOS V.V blanks. Don't hold your breathe.

I'm in the wrong business, I should be making those security bars!

About the keys, so far I've seen Viro and V.V as originals, although I have no idea (yet) who or what V.V is. Viro is an established Euro manufacturer. Maybe someone can throw some light on V.V.

The latest security bar key I saw on ebay also seems to have been cut to code 031, I think Bill is correct, there are very few codes in use (caution, owners!).

The Silca key blank is a nice replacement, although for the purists it is of course marked Silca and not Viro or V.V. With regard to materials, all steel keys that I use will stick to a magnet, so that's how we tell them from brass before they're cut to reveal the color inside.

The Silca keys brand (made in Italy) produces both steel and brass keys, sometimes the same blank will be available in both, sometimes in only one material or the other. There's a discussion of the merits and drawbacks of steel vs. brass on my website, but for a key that's going to have little use I wouldn't be too concerned about lock wear. The lock wafers (disks) may be steel anyway. The important thing here (as with any lock) is to keep it clean and lubricated inside. Dirt and no lube will chew both locks and keys.

Concerning Synchro's comments about me I stand by my full money-back guarantee of any work I do, including the highly specialized service of decoding keys from emailed photos.

    Ciao! Stuart - http://www.keys4classics.com

This is true, he didn't charge me for the 2 trials and he does have a money back guarantee.
9 months later I still don't have a key and he just responded to my last 3 previously unanswered emails that I sent him over 5 months ago. Obviously he has been very busy, he is competent, and as I said before I was very happy with the keys that he cut from keys I had with key/cut codes.
