    Hello All,

I’m having the water jacket ports welded on my head. Erosion has got the better of them. Obviously the head will need to be resurfaced. My question is, how much can you re-surface from the head. What is the stock thickness and from where do you measure? Anyone know the min. dimension?

    Thanks

    Steve

You haven't gotten responses so I thought I would chime in. I have had the heads cleaned up 3 times during my ownership and so far so good. I told the shops to call me if they had to take off more than 0.010". Nobody called so I would guess that 0.030 might be safe. Have no idea where to measure from but it might be a good idea to check valve clearance if you take much off. Just put some putty on the piston head, put on the head with the old gasket and tighten a few head studs. Put the cams in, time them, and turn things over slowly. You want about 0.100" clearance in the valve cut-outs in the pistons. Watch out for the valve hitting the edge of the piston cut-out on the way down. Guaranteed bent valve if it can. I have custom pistons with slightly larger diameter cut-outs than stock. Saw a close call and had the piston mfg. open things up a little. Had a bent valve with old pistons used as masters. Better safe...!

    Good luck,

    John
