    I am in the process of re-doing the interior on my '74 246 GTS. I have had the seats re-done,door panels are in process & the rear bulkhead piece being made. I have also put in new carpets. I am having touble removing the horizontal rear trim piece that goes above the rear bulkhead cover. I found the 3 nuts in the engine bay (thanks Jim) and have unbolted these but it still will not come out. I am cautious as I do not want to bend the aluminum piece itself. I may just try to slide the new bulkhead covering underneath it without taking it off. However I am open to suggestions. I am also thinking about replacing the paper (seems like roofing pape or construction paper) that covers the floor (underneath the carpet) and wonder what I should replace it with .     I have that upper trim piece above the rear bulhead and those 3 threaded attacement studs are very long and may be skewed enough to hang you up. I would have someone on the engine side wiggle and lightly tap with a small plastic mallet (if necessary) to get them to push out. Don't hit too hard or you will make a bump out in the trim inside the car. Those studs are all that holds the trim on. I am going to make the carpet underlayment out of 30# felt as that seems to be what it is. I am going to leave my felt underlayment out in the sun for a while to out-gas and lose some of it's tackiness.

    Tom - as previously discussed, push on the long threaded screws rather than pull on the horizontal interior bulkhead trim. The trim will bend. I am sure that the long screws are either "glued" in position by bulkhead undercoating, or simple stuck. Gently push the ends of the screws forward while gently pulling on the horizontal trim.

    I, too, want to replace the flooring underneath the carpet. I do not believe it is felt. It is like paper or plastic. A body repair friend said that it is easily available and used quite a bit in later model cars.

    Jim & Racer...thaks for the response. I will give it a tap with a plastic mallet or something else & try not to bend it. I was wondering if the gts are different than the gt's. The gts has 2 studs that the top cover goes on that is mounted to the top of the trim piece. I took these out but wondered if somehow they were affixed. I will give it a shot & see what happens. I will do some checking on the paper (or whatever it is is) any idea where to get #30 felt? Jim I have not started the rear end as I want to get everything done from the rear bulkhead forward. Presently, in addition to the interior I am putting in a new ignition switch. I think I am 70% done with everything & soon will tackle the rear end/engine. Did I mention that it is 25 degrees back east??Jim how is Crystal Cove looking these days...watch that sunburn!! Thanks

    30# felt is roofing paper or tar paper. Let us know if you found something better that could work for the underlayment.

    I'm considering using 1/8- 1/4"" thick open cell foam that I have that is heat resistant to about 400 degrees. I have already used it under the headliner with success. We use it on our hot foil stamping presses at work. I may use it behind the bulkhead when I do that, too.

    Might provide a more stable base, and some noise reduction, too.
