    Freeman,

My serial number is 01630. I located my gearbox type and number stamped on the gearbox case near the rear left side (drivers side) motor mount, and is only visible looking up from below the engine.

The engine block stamping question is even more interesting, especially since the owners manual that is for my series shows a picture with "135CS" stamped on the block.

    Russell,

My Chassis *00474* has the engine number stamped beginning with 135c. My data plate has 135cs stamped into it. In the 246 "L" owner's manual dated 1970 it shows 135cs stamped onto the motor. A 206 has 135b stamped on its motor. It would be interesting to have other Dino owner's share their chassis number and state whether their motor has stamped 135c or 135cs. Maybe we will see a pattern.

    Hello everyone,

Can anyone give me his thoughts about 246GT#00420? What I would really be interested is what the engine or gearboxnubmer should approximately be? I am provided be quite some information from the first and only (!) owner but I would like to have it proven and compared. Until now I was into Jaguar E-type and a 1971 911 E (that I recently sold) and now I would love to switch to the Dino 00420. Yes it should be Dino 246 #8 as I found out ...

so hello from a newbie from Austria,
    Thomas

P.S.: how much "bar" should the engine have on a compression test?

    Thomas,

Congratulations on your Dino *00420* and your first post! Matthias Bartz might have the info you're seeking. We'll see if he chimes in.

This is a really neat post. Learned a few things and lots of good information. I've owned 00464 for a few years-complete nut and bolt restoration, much more fun and better to drive than my 72 GTS. One of the last 206's built, around serial number 00380 or so, owned by a body shop owner from Dayton, Oh and Naples, Fl, sold at Pebble last year for around $750,000. $825,000 with buyers premium added and set high water mark. I don't know of any that have sold for more. That was a nice car, actually won best 6 cylinder at Cavallino 2 years ago. Lots of eyes on 206's and "L" series now, even with market softening a bit. Any idea how many 206's and "L" series are still around? Seems like there are different numbers floating around on total production, anyone know for sure. Thanks.

    Hey everyone,

It finally happened this week. #00420 moved into our garage! There is a lot to learn and some work, but I think it´s not too bad, at least it drives! The car was really unattended and unloved the last many years. But it drives and shifts and all major things work. All oils are changed. The interior needs a lot of cleaning, but looks much better already...

Thank you for your advices! Matthias Bartz was helpful and patient and finally lead to the decision to buy the car.

    1 bar = 1 atmosphere = 14.7 psi

The most important thing about a compression test is that the cylinders are all within 10% of each other. The test is done with the throttle held fully open and preferably with a hot engine. Disconnect the wire from the coil to the distributor and take out all the spark plugs to decrease load on the starter motor.

Screw in the compression gauge and spin the motor. After a few rotations the gauge will stop increasing and you can stop spinning the engine.

You will probably see numbers between 175 and 195 psi, or 11 to 13 bar

just needed to share: After changing the brake pistons, change the foam in the seats, change all oils and liquids, having the radiator net changed and the greasing of the greasepoints we made the first ride of 76 km´s without only one problem (alternator is not working properly). Finally the car passed the "TÜV" - test and will get his licensing as soon as the austrian government completes the paperwork - yes, the licensing test was passed without problems as well. Of course there is a lot to do bring it back to it´s total glory but ....

What a great pleasure this fabulous car is!
