i guess the hood is not in to bad of shape ..other than that looks pretty much like every body panel got hit
Too bad we cannot import vintage cars at the moment, but what might it be worth? And, does anyone know about #02516? Regards, Alberto
Keep the outside appearance completely stock and in period, but install a recent ferrari engine and running gear. What a retro beast it could be
This car can be restored completely to original specs. All needed parts can be found if you have some time. I have most of them ;-)
Has 4 new wheels and trunk/engine lid/hood unless they just put them on to sell. At least it's rolling so not completely stripped...
I think it is worth more than what's being talked about. What would it cost to build a new body? $100k?
These cars are getting valuable enough that you may be able to look at a basket case like that and restore it properly without it being economic suicide.
I don't think this car is as bad as one would first think. Obviously a challenge, but not economical suicide.
How close is the Fiat Dino engine to the 246? Is the bore/stroke the same? I remember seeing 2 barn find ones maybe 6 mos ago somewhere in the Midwest-I think they wanted $8k for both. Donor? Or am I way off? I would assume the trans is totally different-anybody here that familiar with the Fiat Dino?
2.4 engine is almost the same but gearbox is totally difft. I understand that a Fiat dino coupoe 2.4 can be used for a dino rebuild, and as a source of heads. Someone told me that you ahd to modify the sump mopunting as the box is different. The odd gearbox turns up every 2 years or so ! McCann had a 206 for some years but it has now gone. Although am sure that some people can be persuaded to part with one they have hidden in their garage for £20k or USD20at a guess.
Yup, but that 'parting' price is most likely only going upwards! There is a shop/specialty dealer in CT that had a fully rebuilt 246 engine for 80k about a year ago! I laughed at the time-it's a fiat engine...right?!! Thanks Snowric-This is great info-and if makes those barn find fiat Dino's massively more attractive (by the way-only one engine between them).
Looks like many parts, and maybe the original drivetrain were donated to a later Dino according to dinoreg and it's unlikely it could be reunited with this car. With alot of work and using a pile of prevously sourced parts, you could build a car and it could be nice but it would always have this history of being a wreck with a non matching drivetrain which limits the economics IMHO. If you want a challenging project (I'm looking at the severe rust in some photos), and have all the missing part$, and just want to have a nice car to drive then this could be an option - and need to extract it from Japan if not local. Bringing a Dino back from the dead is satisfying and it would be great if someone could do it.
Unfortunately, it appears that the chassis number was ground off and the same number was re-stamped with un-original fonts. What then? Regards, Alberto
Would it really be impossible to have another plate re stamped? Possibly the factory? Regards, Alberto PS. This is the reply from the seller to my queries: " First of all, the car was registered in Germany in 1971. As far as I know, this car had some kind of accident from the left side in Germany for more than 20 years ago. The owner sold an engine and other parts including drivetrain in Germany and sold only the body/frame to someone in Japan for more than 20 years ago. The car was sold to a private person for about 10 years ago and sat until we buy it for about 2 years ago. The frame number has been shaved for some reasons, but the number itself is remain on a top part of the frame. We have bought all suspension parts all around the World and put suspension and wheels, etc to be able to push the car and move around. Yes, the rust is heavy as you can see from the photos and it need complete restoration for both bodies and frames. Basicly, it is a very original 1971 Dino 246GT (Tipo E) left hand drive and will be a very nice car when it is fully restored."
the factory could do it, but with half the car gone, I`m not sure Classiche will do it.... maybe car was stolen or is a different car... key would be to identify as many body no`s as possible... same body no`s... ;-)
