I want to thank syncro for the term "rain tray". I didn't know what to call these panels attached to the engine cover. Well, both of my rain trays are only attached along one edge. And they rattle as expected.

    How are these attached?

    Thanks,

    Manny

I've seen them attached with sheet metal screws but the proper way according to several LA Restoration show winners is with aluminum rivets.
Yes, really long ones (1 and 1/8th inch I believe) for the engine compartment lid, much shorter for ones under the front bonnet vents.

Then again, you may find it easier to locate sheet metal screws that fit...

    Synchro,

My car is in the shop for electrical issues so I can't confirm this. But I don't recall seeing any evidence that the rain trays have ever been riveted or screwed. Hence my mystery as to how they are attached. I thought maybe spot welding and that mine had just vibrated apart.

    Thanks,

    Manny

There are typically three holes along the long edge of each engine tray that mate with the underside, square tubed rail of the engine bonnet holes for mounting. Check for these.

Do you have a USA version with the emissions placque on the Driver's side tray and a Shell oil placque on the passenger's side tray?

I do have a US car but I can't say I recall seeing plaques. I'll check once I get the car back.

My Dino has 3 holes on outside of trays that mate with 3 holes through square tube braces. There were 3 long pop rivets holding things together. Trays were sprung so that inside edges were pressed firmly against engine cover. I removed rivets during re-paint and later replaced them with stainless 6-32 pan head machine screws and elastic stop nuts. Stop nuts are hidden between tray and cover. You can hold the nuts for tightening by reaching through the louvers. Looks good and its easy to remove trays for clean up or re-painting. Use same idea in front. Dont forget to spring the trays before the last screw is tightened.

    Hi John,

Please excuse my ignorance. When you refer to the inside edges of the trays, am I correct in understanding that you mean the long edge closest to the centerline of the car? These are the edges that are detached on my car.

And what do you mean by sprung? I don't recall anything that the edge could press firmly against. But then again, I don't have the car to look at right now. She'll be back this week.

    Thanks,

    Manny

Mine has three rivets along the side closest to the outside edge of the front trunk. In other words, farthest from the centerline of the car.

    The rest simply floats.

If the rattle bothers you, I would suggest using a small bit of double sided tape, with a foam center. it's maybe 1/16" thick, and is often sold as either tape to attach things to the wall, or as an insulator for doors and the like.

You can get it at any hardware store. Simply attach a piece to the unsecured end of the tray, it will dampen the rattle, completely. You could black out the edges with a black marker, no one would even see it.

    Hi Dave,

I was thinking of doing that as a quick fix until I heard from other owners. I just couldn't believe that it would be designed to just be flapping like that.

Inside edges are closest to centerline. They are free. If you take trays off, you can adjust bend of outside edge so inside edge is sprung up against inside of engine cover. It is dificult but probably not imposible to adjust the bend with the trays in place. Of course, a bead of black silicone along the inside edge will stop the rattle quickly and easily.

Mine does not flap around and has a pad (possibly double stick tape?) on the side with the tab/foot of the tray that touches the lid. This tab/foot is opposite to the side of the tray that rivets to the lid.

It sounds from all of your replies that what mine needs is to have the trays bent a bit so that the inner edge sits against the engine cover. And to sandwich a thin pad.

    Thanks to all,

Make that pad out of thin foam, or perhaps double stick tape / some adhesive and you'll not have a problem.
