I agree check it aginst the old one, maybe the source everyone is using has a bad jig or mold. I know a good guy in Dennmark that makes short run windows for many rare italian cars and his finished product is excellent.
FWIW I know someone who went through 4 or 5 windshield for his 308, that had never been apart or wrecked, before he got one that fit all were lifted in a corner 1/2 to 1 inch. At the same time he was trying to get one to fit I got one to fit on the first try.
Wonderfull offer. Couldn't turn it down. Will go down to pick up pieces at Jon's convenience. He hasn't actually got the new leather yet and has to make sure the new leather is just right. Will take my camera, record the trip and write a few Sagas of the experience. Only a 3 1/2 hour trip from Santa Barbara so should be a fun Dino day. Thanks Jon. John
You can stop by my Ferrari Shrine in Ventura if its on the weekend? Jon's been there Rob 805-643-6003 Image Unavailable, Please Login
The forklift came in handy today. I moved the engine onto the test stand everything is wired up and almost ready to try. Tomorrow I'm going to wire everything neatly and then it should be about ready. Tomorrow I'm tackling the windshield again and see if I can come up with a solution. Our Fchat friend ajmarton has gotten some good advice for me from his friend who makes Ferrari windshields in Finland. Will keep everyone posted on that front. You might want to put a fan in front of that beast when you do run it. Don't forget to tape (ah, video, no one uses tape anymore) the run. Alberto
Yes with the fan, not quite done yet. I'm going to record it IF it starts. What the heck, I'll record it if doesn't start.
Man, that is a work of art. Wally Clarke has one in his living room - it serves as a coffee table of sorts. Do you use a muffler with that set up?
I'd fit Campy's on it and take it for a spin. Wonder what the 0-60 would be or the power to weight ratio!!!! Good luck
While I disagree with you on a few Formula One posts in the racing section, I can't help but admire what you've done in this thread. I've basically been following in the shadows since day one here, and this thing is going to/does look absolutely astonishing. Great work Jon.
Bt the way My son Jeff was helping me until he headed back to college. We are Mormon and he just got called to the New Hampshire mission, which includes New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine,Mass, and part of NY. Any Dino owners back there? He'll be there for 2 years. The closest we've been to that part of the country was the Montreal F1 2 years ago. Best trip ever. We got tickets through Ferrari and sat right above the pits with gourmet food, meeting the drivers, going to the pits and the Ferrari garage. Wish I could afford to do a few more like that. The only way to go. At least I did it once.
I think that means you'll need to take a road trip to the NE with that beautiful Dino. It will certainly be reliable enough and with the fall colors... Best of luck with the rest of the project. Does your son still have the black Dino, or did you guys already sell that? Peter
Jon - what gear did you leave the transmission in? The recommendation is 2nd. This provides for the shortest length of shift rod protruding from the gear box (ease of engine insertion in the chassis) and for the the shift lever to rest in its center position (left-right center). Hence, when reconnecting the universal joint at the gear box end, the length of rod must be pulled towards the rear to engage the rod in the gear box. No twisting is necessary. This will provide for minimal load while you run your engine for a while. I assume that you have oil in the transmission and transfer case. Keep cables and wires away from the half-shaft flanges. (By the way, if you do not know which gear the transmission is in, you are in deep oil...one may have to remove the transmission bottom plate to line things up.) Let her rip. Jim S.
Still problems with the windshield. The new Sigla windshield I got doesn't fit. It sticks up about 1/2" on the bottom left pillar to about 1/2 way up. So I took the glass out of the black coupe (original glass) it was closer but still popped out in the same area, which leads me to believe it is something with the left pillar. UNFORTUNATELY I learned a valuable lesson the hard way, don't EVER throw anything out. I had no idea there would be a problem with the windshield so when the new one came , to make room I threw it out. If only! If only I had it now I could see what the problem is knowing that that windshield fit. I am at a total loss and have no idea what to do at this point. I need some expert advice or I'm going to be wearing goggles to drive my car. Depressed in San Diego!
Just thinking of a simple test maybe you already tried it, place the supposed faulty windshield on a flat surface and check if all 4 corners touch or only 3.
Jon, You have a gazillion pictures. Any before and after from the same angle of the front/frame section on the car? If you have them, you can overlay the photos for comparison to see if at some point the pillars got torqued out of shape. For that matter, you have the other car, maybe some comparison measurements are in order, or, cut a template from the 73, Start with cardboard, end up with plywood (After all the windshield is out) and place it in the opening of the blue car, see how close the openings are to each other. That at least can give you a reference point. I'd hate to think that you need to re-work the pillars to get the window to fit. Also, if the windshield is still out of the '73, see if the new windshield fits that car ok. Trim too. Also, contact Mike Franz at Delphais collision. 610-431-1660, tell him I told you to call. He's put windshields back in several Dinos after repainting them, including one where the car almost broke in two when he started to take it apart. Only thing that kept that car from collapsing on itself was the top. If he'd taken it out, I swear the car would have bent in two. So, he's seen several windshields in and out and may have some insight, and pictures, as he carefully documents each job. Dave/
