After seeing the post on omgjon's thread that showed the area of the trunk and the "side panels", rather than hi-jack his restoration thread, I thought about posting it here.

This is how the side of my trunk area appears. The ignition system is hidden with a fiberglass piece that is covered in carpet, as it is on every Dino I have seen. What are the side panels, how do they work (fit in place), and how many people have seen these before?

My USA car is exactly as Shawn's is, with the open wells and carpetted cover over the ignition box/coil
    but
My Euro Dino has the vertical panels that square the trunk area off like Jon's. I assumed these vertical panels were not original and pulled them off to put in storage, but noted that the carpet matched very well. Perhaps I was wrong and the Euro trunk area was finished off differently?

Both are 1973 246 GTS models

PS - Shawn: Nice MSD system!

My Dino is a 1972 Euro coupe. My trunk looks just like Mr. Speer's. I have owned and studied Dinos since 1984, and have never seen or heard of these side panels until now. I don't think they look bad at all on OMG's (nothing looks bad on his car), but I do not believe they were ever issued from the factory. Anything's possible in the timeline of Dinos, but I would need to see evidence of these panels coming from the factory. Just my .02.

One thing that is different in mine (perhaps it is like this for all GT models), is that the floor is flat. The ridge that lines up with the apocryphal side panels does not appear.

Once nice thing I take advantage of is that the corners of the carpet lift up in the rear corner for a bit more storage space. Just enough for a few extra containers of oil.

I my by no means "mr.", but i have always sought out rare and dumb stuff from the factory. I have never heard of these. That doesn't mean much as there is so much to be discussed. I remember when i first particpated in F-Chat, the idea of a factory soft top was rumor and speculation. After years of searching, I have found what i believe is factory. I am still looking for the "Beach Chairs", that i know exist, but can't bring anyone that has them to sell them.

These panels may be factory and they may not be. It is something new and out of the ordinary for me. I have one 73 Euro GTS and it doesn't have these. That doesn't mean much, but having never heard of these, it is of interest. I have no reason to believe jon or anyone else would talk about them if they didn't exist, but can we get more info from everyone?

By the way, I am still looking for beach covers.

If you have something like this lying around, please PM me.

The extra bracing isn't a gt vs. gts thing, it is based on the year of production

My 1972 US-model GT (#4866), which I believe is fairly complete, is like WSpeer's. Bracing, carpetted cover over the ignition, but no upright side panels.

My euro car is finished exactly like WSpeer car, its a Euro RHD model 1973.

Thanks for the pic on the coil cover, mine is missing and been trying to see one to copy. Thanks for that.

If the side panels were fitted from new (which i doubt) then did they have the small plastic container in the rear boot well.

The trunk area of my 1973 Euro Dino #06680 is exactly as shown in the photo. The only dfference is that the cover for the ignition is made if metal not fiberglass.

I have owned three 1972 Dinos, all coupes. No bracing. No side panels. All had cover to fit over the coil and Dinoplex.
