Bought wheel centers for my 208. They dont fit the wheels, or the black Ferrari bases that have the Horsies. Anybody have a part number for the correct retainer for the Dino inserts? These things were not cheap. Otherwise i am going to have to leave the Prancing Ponies on the cars wheels, which is annoying. help ... Interesting. Though similar, those wheels are different from the 246, which have the aluminum center caps that cover the lug area. My guess is that the emblems are sized to go on the 246 caps.
I think you are 100% correct. I know the 208 / 308 series had two different types of wheels. I always thought they were the same as the wheels used on the 206/246 cars, but now i think there are variations between the series. the 206/246 real Dinos have a much bigger area for the centercap to go into, where as even though these say "Ferrari" and have a Ferrari part number, i am betting the small Fiat Dino wheel caps may be the ones that fit. now i have to figure out where to find Fiat Dino centercaps! thank you for your reply, i feel like my car is lower on the food chain than a Mondial !! i wonder if TopGear ever drop pianos on 208 Dino's, like they do those Morris car! LOL
There are a lot of differences between the wheels itself and their emblems, if you compare the wheels from a 246 with the ones from a GT4. But the deviations are not easy to find or visible from far away: At first the wheels itself have mainly two main differences: 1) The shape from the wheel on the outside where it goes to the tyre is lets say "flat" or straight on the GT4 and kind of a "curve or konvex" shape on the 246. 2) The center of the wheel is diffenernt as you described it allready. The 246 have bigger caps (stainless steele and not aluminium, seetop of the picture) sits on four brakets on the wheel. These brakets are not on the GT4 wheels but therefore the wheelscenter itself comes out of the wheels and is part of the wheel. For each wheel (all the same size) you need different caps/emblems: The GT4 caps need the same plastic caps as later on the 308 GTB-GTS five spoke wheels, the need to be clipped in the wheels center. BUT not with the prancing horse, the need to have the "Dino" on it (picture: second cap from the right side). The caps you bought were reproduction caps for the 246 wheels and sit on the center of the big stainless steel cap. They are also not really like the original ones as these were more flat and not with the heavy metal back, see picture. The have to be glued on the stainless stelle cap which is difficult due to their heavy weight. And finally one last mystery: The "Dino" exists in black or in blue colour! The Dino 246 Campagnolo wheels in 7,5x14 do also need the GT4 caps and should have the version with the blue Dino. The black letter should be the correct ones on a 208GT4. Nicolai, shouldn't the 246 Campagnolo wheels use the "Campagnolo" caps, rather than the Dino caps? Andy
Good question Andy. I have seen the Campagnolos mostly with the Campagnolo aluminum center caps, but maybe that is because most of them were bought later on the after market and the caps were already included? I could hardly imagine that Ferrari put a "Dino" cap on all other 246 and again on the early GT4´s, but only the few cars with Campagnolo wheels whould be without. And they were very rare, as they became ugly or might get lost there were probably no new one available and they were replaced against the Campagnolo ones? I´m not aware any dealer who sold them in the last 20 years... But maybe an Owner whose car had these from factory on can say this, or Matthias knows it? Hello Andy, absolute correct. The Campagnolo rims on 246 GT/S have been fitted original with Campagnolo caps. Regards Matthias
thats where i bought the (wrong) caps from! i also ordered the Dino key fob, because i thought it was cool, but they did not send it. Sent an email, of course, but got no answer.
I wanted to say Thank you to the rest of you for taking the time to take and post those pics. I would have never known there were so many little differences. i have never seen black Dino script either, but in the USA Dinos are rare, so i i have seen many of them of any variation. The pictures are a tremendous help, thank you so much to all of you for giving me a new direction ( and part numbers!) to go after. Michael edit, i wanted to share 2 pics of my car. i am working on getting it sorted out. i promise the 206/246 guys i wont post too much about my 208 in this section, but none of the "308" guys have been able to help with some of this stuff! Great pictures Al, it seems that your emblems o the pictures are with blue letters. Do you have also black ones and can you confirm a different part no.? Regards Nicolai
when i got my dino in 1980 , i wanted to change the center caps from the dino script to the prancing horse centers (i know this is a no no on this forum ). anyway wanting to keep the originals rather than trying to pry the dino script off i purchased another set of hubcaps , took the dino script off them and replaced those with the prancing horse centers. the pictures show original caps with original dino script. second picture shows a slightly different dino cap , with more angular script on the N and the very tail. " dino " is also a little larger overall . again i got these in 1980. i wonder if these were repros or if there were variations, maybe from the 308 dinos ? a couple of years later i switched to campy wheels but still have held on to my eight hubcaps - 4 with " dino " , 4 with prancing horses ! dan Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
