I have gone through the archives but this is still unclear. For a 1980 308GTBi - There qty 2 27mm nuts at the bottom of the dip stick tube.
Question: Does the top one (larger of the 2) turn separately or is it fastened to the tube? The reason I ask is that when I turn it the tube also turn as well as the bottom 27 mm nut. See attached dwg. I do not want to force the nut and break the tube if they are one unit. Thanks in advance.

Undo the nut on the dip stick. If the lower section starts to turn, you will have to hold it steady and break the dipstick nut free. Sometimes heat helps with this as the nut rusts to the tube causing the entire assmebly to want to turn together.

    Hey Awulff,

    Greetings from Ontario California!

Hey I just recently took my dipstick tube out to remove my oil pan.

Here's the skinny: I actually used a standard wrech, yes, it seemed to fit better than the metric. The top nut is the only one you need be concerned with to R/R the dipstick tube. Mine removed without much effort. The nut is actually affixed to the dipstick tube, so it'll remove as one piece. The other nut you're seeing is for the straw (lack of better description), that the dipstick slides in to, this doesn't need to be removed unless you're wanting to R/R the oil pan.

BTW: are you R/R-ing your oil pan seal too?

    Hope that helps.

    Chris.

I finally got the dip stick upper 27 mm nut off. Because I already had the AC compressor and alternator out I was able to get modified (I cut it half!) 27 mm wrench on the top nut. Then through a small opening I placed a 20”flat screw driver and wedged (light taps with hammer) it between the lower nut (which had been turning) and the housing. See photos.
Then I took a 1’ x 25 “long pipe placed it against the end of the modified wrench and gave a good whack and the nut let go. Hope this help others, trying to get this apart.

    Thanks tbakowsky and Chris.
Yes I am replacing the oil and gear pan gaskets/seals. I have bought new ones but will be making my own with the fresh patterns.
