Ok. This may sound really silly, but I can't see the oil level on my dip stick. I have checked the oil level on many cars and have done maintenance for many years. So, I am not a total rookie.

I just purchased my 85 Mondial QV two weeks ago, and the owner changed the oil less than 100 miles before I purchased the car. Oil change was done by Grand Prix Motors in Campbell, CA. The mechanic used a 15W-50 weight (I think Castrol, but hard to read on invoice). I have driven car about 200 miles.

I attached a picture of the dip stick. It is wet, but I just can't see an oil line. Car only has 22K miles on it. You can see that oil is wet on the rag. Are there any tips to accurately check the oil level. Maybe the oil is not noticeable because it has less than 500 miles. I attached a picture for reference.

Compression check came out OK. Is there an average oil consumption 308QV engines will burn? How many miles can you usually go before adding a quart of oil.

There are very specific directions for checking the oil to be found in the owner's manual. For my 1986 (although a 1987 manual) they are: get oil temp to 140-158 degrees, shut off engine, wait 15 minutes, THEN test oil. I'm only putting this out there because I wonder if the oil was still up in the heads and galleries when you tested. I think it usually shows up on my car, but I suppose if you were already low it might be more of an issue.

The OM states oil consumption of 1-2 quarts per 600 miles as normal, so...

This is on page 57 should you wish to verify.

    Good luck.

You are not alone. I've had a tough time seeing the oil level. Maybe becasue the color of the metal. It's easier to check when cold when the oil is thicker, but not accurate. I do what you did there. After the 15 minute wait on warm engine I pull the stick and make sure it is completely dry as best I can, check oil level and set it against a paper towel to see oil level. I usually get over 1000 miles to a quart but it can vary.

Your oil level looks a bit high in the photo, I think top is the bottom of the nut. 500 miles of driving will fix that.
