I am aware of the fact that prior to 2008, Lamborghini did not employ direct injection in the Gallardo engine, instead relying on inefficient intake manifold technology.

I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade the obsolete technology in pre-08 Gallardos to take advantage of direct injection? I suspect that to do so would be cost prohibitive in most cases however, I am curious if it can be done, and what it would take to do so.

I doubt that would be possible; you'd have to disassemble the engine, bore a hole into the cylinder heads, hope they're designed to accommodate direct injection in whatever way you choose to implement it, get a new engine computer and find someone to program it from scratch, so on and so forth. With the cost of gallardo's, you'd be better off just trading it in.

What would be the point? By itself it does basically nothing to engine performance. Maybe be more eco freindly?

What "Iniezione Diretta Stratificata" did allow was for Lamborghini to increase the compression ratio which combined with the other significant engine design changes (including the larger bore) produced the performance gains.

Yes, it can be done. Change the cyl heads, intake manifold, fuel system, computer, etc... Easily $20k in parts though.

And where would you get all these parts? The parts from a longer crank 5.2 engine have nothing to do with a 5.0 engine.
