I have just had my distributor advance mechanism rebuilt after the underside froze up. Work done in very nice shop, Exoticars USA in Milford NJ. First job other than AC outside of my garage in 6 years!

I noticed that the distributor cap button was frozen, no spring to it at all. Exoticars sent me two size buttons to replace the old one. I first tried some penetrating oil before touching it. There was nothing protruding to pull on so after soaking it I ended up pushing it all the way to the bottom. More soaking a prodding but it will not move. The little spring does not have enough push to overcome the corrosion. I took a stab at air pressure from the coil wire hole but that is sealed.

Any ideas to get it out? Since one of the new buttons is correct, I do not mind destroying the old button as long as I don't damage the very thin bronze sleeve that it moves in. I am sure this is not a first for this forum so let me hear about it soon. Later today a small drill bit will attack it!

Used small drill bit. It went easily with a sharp bit since button is graphite.

Getting the new little spring in was challenging too, since bottom spring is large than the hole. Its in, but not in as good a shape as new, but a lot better than what was left of old one. Graphite rod is kind of held but the spring but not too tight so care is needed getting cap over distributor without losing it.
