Distributor floating on Dino 246GTS

Happy to be aboard! Looking for help with 1974 Dino 246GTS distributor connection. Is there a connecting pad of some sort between the distributor and the drive mechanism? Having removed the distributor to access the coolant hose to the secondary holding reservoir, I find that the connection of the tangs allows about 150 degrees of free movement. Also, in testing the timing, the timing jumps all over. Is there supposed to be a fiber or rubber pad with slots for the opposing metal tangs to seat in so as to steady the distributor to prevent this floating effect? Thank you for your assistance.
